A lecture focused on Second World War aviation crash sites as heritage assets is to be hosted by the University of Wolverhampton.

The free event, run in partnership with the RAF Museum, will take place on Thursday, 15 November 2018 at 6.30pm.

Dr Phil Marter, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Winchester, will present the lecture in room MC001 in the Millennium City Building at the Wolverhampton City Campus.

The talk is the fifth and final lecture in the RAF Museum’s 2018 series of Trenchard Lectures in Air Power Studies.

Professor of Military History at the University of Wolverhampton, John Buckley, said: “During the Second World War, thousands of aircraft were lost whilst on training flights, shot down over foreign soil, or otherwise failed to return safely to their home aerodromes.

“As our veterans pass away, these scattered sites have begun to take on a new and important mantle as the final witness to particular aspects of their legacy.

“This lecture will examine some of the key challenges facing European Second World War aviation heritage and suggest ways in which RAF aviation crash sites in particular, might be appropriately considered in the future.”

The Trenchard Lectures in Air Power Studies form a part of the RAF Museum’s Research Programme for 2018.
