Chemical Engineering students score a winner at sporting competition

Chemical Engineering students from the University of Wolverhampton scored a winner at a recent sports competition.

The 2500 students took part in the Frank Morton Sports Day - an annual sporting competition between the students of chemical engineering departments from UK and Irish universities.   The comprises a wide range of competitions and incorporates a large careers fair and evening activities.

The event is held every year on one of the campuses of one of the competing universities and this year was held at the University of Sheffield.

The event is named after Frank Morton, a prominent professor of Chemical Engineering, who taught at Birmingham University until 1956, when he switched to teaching at UMIST (now University of Manchester).

His love for sport and connections at both universities led him to organise the first of these sports days. The competition began in 1961 as a football match between the two departments, but by the 1980s, the event had grown to include many more universities and sports.

For the first time in the event’s history, the University of Wolverhampton fielded sports teams with the football team winning their competition out of 34 teams from around the UK

Professor Phil Cox, Director of Studies, Chemical Engineering at the University, said: “Over 2,500 students participated in this year’s event and we were absolutely thrilled to win the football competition.

“Considering that this was the first time we’ve taken part in this event, the students put on a really great show. The event is an excellent platform for students from different Universities to network with each other whilst at the same time taking part in sporting activities.”

Anyone interested in studying Chemical Engineering at the University should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 15th June 2019.
