Hear Her Song gives musical voice to extraordinary women

12/06/2019

The University of Wolverhampton will host the premiere of the UK performance of a musical celebration of extraordinary women.

In partnership with The Canales Project, the University has worked with ten British female composers to use the power of song to deliver the stories of ten remarkable women from around the world in recognition of their success, determination and inspiration.

Hear Her Song will be performed at the Arena Theatre, Wulfruna Street in Wolverhampton on Friday 21st June at 7.30 pm following recent performances in Washington and New York.  Tickets are priced at £12 with concessions £10.

Dr Sarah Browne, Head of the School of Performing Arts at the University, said: “A musical celebration of extraordinary women, this project honours achievements and courageous life choices of distinguished women leaders through new songs inspired by their words.

“We have been thrilled to be part of this exciting project celebrating the achievements of women.  We offer Music students state-of-the-at facilities in our Performance Hub and it’s been amazing for them to be involved in co-producing such a high profile series of events which has given them access to world-leading composers and musicians.”

Since its inception in 2017, Hear Her Song has commissioned twenty-one songs from leading songwriters and composers in the United States and abroad, in collaboration with award-winning, published poet/lyricist Jacqueline Suskin and with music supervision by Kurt Crowley (current music director of Hamilton on Broadway). The UK premiere will feature performances by the composers themselves, in addition to a guest appearance by internationally-renowned operatic soloist, Carla Canales.

Anyone interested in studying in the School of Performing Arts should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 15th June 2019.
