Festival celebrates arts in the region

For the fifth year running, the University of Wolverhampton is staging its seven week festival across Wolverhampton and Walsall in celebration of the arts.

Artsfest is a collaborative project led by the University’s Faculty of Arts including The Performance Hub, based at the Walsall Campus, the Arena Theatre, the School of Humanities and the Wolverhampton School of Art.

Students and staff have collaborated with local venues including the Mander Centre, Newhampton Arts Centre, The New Art Gallery Walsall, the Light House Media Centre and to stage events covering music, dance, theatre, literature, poetry, film, art and design.

A variety of events are on offer including poetry, walks and tours, musical theatre productions, live performances, art exhibitions, music, workshops and talks.

An amateur production of Tim Rice’s Chess will be staged at the Arena Theatre, Shakespeare’s views on love and lust will be discussed, a Sculpture Symposium will be on show at the New Art Gallery Walsall, Jazz will be served up with cream teas and Wolverhampton School of Art students will show off their work at their annual Degree Show.

Miceal Barden, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University, said: “Artsfest is now an established event and this year marks its fifth year.  Once again we have joined with cultural venues from across the city to showcase the Performing Arts, Art and Design, Film and Media and Poetry and Literature. There’s something for everyone with many free activities on offer.

“This year – as well as celebrating the achievements of our 3,000 students – we continue as advocates for the work that they will go on to do after graduation.  We’ve invited an eclectic range of new artists from across the region and further afield, allowing them a chance to use Artsfest as a platform to enhance their careers.”

Artsfest will run from Friday 3rd May until Sunday 30th June 2019. Join the Artsfest conversation online by using #WLVArtsfest.
