A cake featuring a baby sleeping in a flower by a University of Wolverhampton student has won an annual cake competition organised by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

The 'Great midwifery cake off 2019' challenged RCM members to design midwifery themed cakes. The cake with the most likes on the RCM Facebook site won the accolade along with a £250 gift voucher.

The annual International Day of the Midwife (IDM) cake competition was won by Molly Grimston, who is studying for a BSc (Hons) Midwifery at the University, beating off stiff cakey competition from midwives across the UK.

Molly’s triple-tiered and colourful creation features babies’ feet along with butterflies and flowers. Atop her creation is a sleeping baby enveloped in a lotus flower.

Among the many other entries cakes depicted mothers having water births, placentas, a crowning baby’s head and pregnancy bumps.

The Cake-Off competition is part of the RCM’s celebration of International Day of the Midwife. This takes place on 5 May each year with events led by RCM members across the UK running around that date.

Molly said: I’ve always been a keen baker and regularly bake alongside my midwifery training. The RCM bake off event was the perfect opportunity for me celebrate being a student midwife as well as my love for baking! I am so surprised to have won and had such incredible support from all my friends and family. Now it’s time to enjoy some cake.”

Commenting on the cake competition and IDM, Gill Walton, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “I offer my congratulations to Molly on her magnificent cake, it really is a thing of beauty. I am sure it tasted just as good as it looks. Thanks also to all those who took part and who make this such a feature of the IDM celebrations every year.

“There has also been a wonderful response to IDM by this year with events in maternity units up and down the country.  I thank all our midwife and maternity support worker members for making it such a success.”
