University leads EU digital learning project

The University of Wolverhampton will lead a new European digital learning project aimed at increasing student engagement using interactive textbooks.

The Co-created Interactive Courseware (CIC) project addresses the EU priority for open education and innovative practices in a digital era.

It will combine a social learning environment where students can help each other and track their progress, with a fully automated publishing flow where authors can publish courseware.

This will create interactive textbooks with no technical overhead, and a learning analytics engine offering teachers insights into the learning trajectory of their students.

John Traxler, Professor of Digital Learning, said: "This project will build the resources that will support these newly available tools into the curriculum, and create new ways of learning."

The technical framework, Nextbook, is currently under development. It turns textbooks into advanced learning tools with easy-to-use features, including in-text highlighting, note-taking, and integrated live chat with peers.

Academics from the University's Education Observatory will lead CIC, which is part of the Erasmus+ 2019 Key Action 2 Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education and is worth €289,790.

The project will involve working with teachers, lecturers and students and the team are interested in hearing from anyone wanting to be involved. Please contact john.traxler@wlv.ac.uk.

The other partners are Nextbook BVBA and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, both in Belgium, the Univerza V Mariboru, in Slovenia and the Instituto Politecnico Do Porto, in Portugal.
