This Apprenticeship is both a professional and academic award and will equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become an occupational therapist. The course will build on your existing abilities and understanding of what it is to be an occupational therapist and on completion of the course, you will be able to work as part of an effective team to deliver high quality, safe and personalised interventions to patients, their families and carers.

This new Health and Care Professions Council approved BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy (Integrated Degree) Apprenticeship is aligned to the requirements of the regulatory, professional, and apprenticeship standards. Following successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy and the Apprenticeship Certificate. You will then be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as an Occupational Therapist.

Degree Apprenticeships are accessible to those employed within a workplace in England. This Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are working in any health or social care setting in a role that is related to occupational therapy and will be of interest if you are either entering or working in the sector and are looking to progress from a support role or equivalent. The Apprenticeship is suitable for those working in the public, private and third sectors and for companies of all sizes.

Regardless of the employing organisation/area of work, apprentices must be able to access weekly supervision of a work-based mentor, who must be a registered occupational therapist for the duration of the apprenticeship programme.

How it works

Apprentices will attend the University's Walsall campus for theoretical modules and assessments one day per week.

Apprentices will also undertake four full time placements throughout the 3 years of study in a location outside the usual workplace to meet the requirement of 1000 hours practice-based learning. The placements may be undertaken in a range of settings where occupational therapists currently work or may be in a role emerging setting where there is not currently an occupational therapist in practice.

The placements will be identified by the employer and agreed by the university prior to the start of the course. Assistance with sourcing placements outside the employed setting will be facilitated by the occupational therapy practice lead at the university.

On successful completion of this course, you will have achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as an Occupational Therapist.

Fees and funding

For employers with a payroll below £3 million: The Government will pay 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship training and assessment for apprentices of any age, for employers who will not be paying the apprenticeship levy. You may also be eligible for extra employer incentives.

For employers with a payroll above £3 million: Since May 2017 employers are able to use their Apprenticeship Levy contributions towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. We will agree a payment schedule and discuss funding availability before you start your apprenticeships and ensure the cost to your business is clear upfront.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will need to be currently employed within the UK and be working or a minimum of 30 hours per week.

For this apprenticeship programme we require applicants to have achieved the following admissions conditions

  • Level 2 Requirements
    • GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) in English Language and Maths
  • Level 3 Requirements
    • A Levels - grades BCC or above
    • BTEC Extended Diploma – grades DMM or above
    • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (104 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 15 credits at distinction)

We also accept Level 3 qualifications that are equivalent in depth to those listed above, if you are unsure if your previous qualifications are acceptable, please register your interest and we will be able to confirm if you are suitable for this course.

Free Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Occupational Health Check:

Due to the professional nature of our course, you will be required to complete a Declaration of Health and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. We will coordinate both of these non-academic conditions with you should your course require this, and you receive an offer from us.

There will be no cost for the DBS this is free to applicants who have secured an offer and have chosen to study at the University of Wolverhampton.
