Student Update - National Restrictions, Live Q&A and Student Support

04/11/2020

Please be aware that this information was shared with students by email and correct at the time of sending. For the latest Covid-19 guidance, please visit our coronavirus webpages: www.wlv.ac.uk/coronavirus. If you are a student who has a query or needs support, please log a helpcall with ASK@WLV in e:Vision (www.wlv.ac.uk/evision).

As you may have seen in the news, the revised national restrictions, which come into effect from Thursday 5 November 2020, require schools, colleges and universities to remain open.

New government guidance includes the following which we would ask students to pay particular attention to:
  • Students should not change their current place of residence, and those living in accommodation should remain at their term-time address from 5 November until at least 2 December 2020.
  • Face coverings will be required across all areas of the University unless your tutor has organised sessions where this is not possible. Please remember that some people are exempt from wearing face coverings, and we expect staff and students to be sensitive to those needs.
  • The University will continue to provide blended learning but students may prefer during this period of national lockdown, or for the safety of yourself or your family, to opt to study wholly online. There is a reminder of the process on how to do that, in this update.
  • To support our students during this time, the libraries will remain open, and we are opening up more Covid-secure study spaces across our campuses where students can safely access IT and Wi-Fi facilities. Students are welcome on to campus to use these in a socially distanced and safe way. These can be booked on the day or up to two weeks in advance – details are available on our library webpages. If you opt to study online, we are offering a laptop loan scheme
  • University gym facilities will close from Thursday but if sport is part of your course, you will be able to continue this activity in a Covid-secure manner during your scheduled on-campus teaching.
  • We will need to review our catering services during the national lockdown period. We are looking to restrict purchases to students and staff and will operate within national guidelines - we will update you further on this over the next few days.
  • The Campus bus services will continue but will operate on a reduced timetable, dependent on usage.  A revised timetable will be published shortly.
There is further information in a letter to students from the Minister for Universities, Michelle Donelan MP.  The letter is available for you to read on the Student News web pages.

Face coverings on campus - more information

Face coverings are now mandatory in all parts of our campuses; this includes communal areas (for example stairwells, corridors and when entering/exiting a building) as well as in teaching spaces, which includes classrooms, lecture theatres and practical rooms.

When on campus, please ensure you have a face covering with you to wear.

Please be mindful that there may be some staff and students who are exempt from wearing a face covering due to a disability. This includes hidden disabilities, such as anxiety and autism. There is not a requirement for people to prove that they are exempt from wearing a face covering, and students can choose to communicate their exemption in their way. Please be sensitive to this.

Everyone must understand that face coverings do not replace good hand hygiene and other safety precautions. This includes effective hand washing, the use of hand sanitisers where soap and water are not readily available, and social distancing.

Live Student Q&A Session

A live student Q&A session will take place on Thursday, 5 November at 3 pm – 4 pm via Zoom. I will provide a brief overview of the current situation and then answer questions from students. I will be joined by President of the Students' Union, Ayo Falana.

To register for this event and submit a question in advance, please visit: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/university-of-wolverhampton-student-qa-covid-19-national-restrictions-tickets-127890926203

Requesting to Move to Learning Online

We recognise that not all students can return to campus and where possible, we are making live teaching also available to online groups. Please note that for some courses with practical elements such as laboratories and performance that will not be possible.
International students are required by their visas to attend their timetabled sessions on campus.

If you would like to move to online teaching, you should contact your Faculty Student Services as early as possible via the e:Vision Helpdesk to ensure we have the right support in place for you to access your learning. It is important that you let us know your preference so that you do not miss out on interactive sessions with your tutors.

You can access our Learning Online guidance where you'll find top tips, links to essential resources and virtual backgrounds which you can download and use during your online face to face teaching sessions.

The new Government advice distinguishes between "critically vulnerable" and "extremely critically vulnerable" people. If you fall into the extremely critically vulnerable category, you should stay at home and not come onto campus, and please notify your Faculty Student Services Team via the e:Vision Helpdesk.

Student assessments and extenuating circumstances

In a recent student update, we informed you that the University is planning for the majority of semester 1 assessments to be held online. This means that wherever possible, we will convert physical exams to an online assessment.

We will continue to operate a trust-based approach to extenuating circumstances. This means, that where a student requires additional time to complete an assessment (for example, due to illness or circumstances related to Covid-19), you will not be required to provide evidence of these circumstances. You must, however, notify the University to request this extension. Requests can be made through e:Vision and must be accompanied by a statement explaining their need for additional time.

Support for Students

The pandemic has created and exacerbated many challenges for us all and we have a range of services to support your wellbeing during this time. All of our students can access online mental health and wellbeing support 24/7 through Togetherall – an online community monitored by trained clinicians. In addition to this our own dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Service offers one-to-one support and can signpost you to additional support services.

Find out more about the student support services available to you here: www.wlv.ac.uk/support

Our staff and students continue to show great resilience and flexibility at this time. The role you are all playing in following the rules and guidance means we continue to keep our university community as safe as is possible.

Many thanks, and stay safe.

Julia Clarke

Deputy Vice-Chancellor
