Conference explores chemistry and biology of peptides

05/06/2019

The University of Wolverhampton is hosting the 14th Chemistry and Biology of Peptides Meeting at its City Campus in July.

Academics from the School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Science and Engineering will be welcoming speakers and visitors from across the world to the annual one day mini-symposium being held on behalf of the British Peptide Society and Protein & Peptide Science Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The event is being held in the Chancellor’s Hall at the City Campus in Wolverhampton.

One of the Conference organisers, Dr Sarah Jones, Reader in Pharmacology at the University of Wolverhampton, created a compound with colleague, Professor John Howl which can penetrate sperm and potentially stop them from swimming.  The research story that male contraception might soon become a reality was picked up by newspapers, magazines and online news outlets all over the world in addition to appearances on BBC2’s Horizon and Channel 4’s Live Well for Longer.

Dr Jones said: “We are delighted to be hosting the annual Chemistry and Biology of Peptides Meeting in Wolverhampton this year.

“This prestigious event brings together a number of world-leading researchers, academics and students in an environment where they can exchange ideas and information whilst at the same time taking the time to network and develop collaborations.”

Other organisers include Dr Fabienne Burlina (Sorbonne University), Dr Peter White (Merck) and Dr John Offer (Francis Crick Institute).
