Building Control degree gets nationally approved Apprenticeship standard

10/02/2020

The University of Wolverhampton recently launched a new Degree Apprenticeship in Building Control Surveying in collaboration with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC).

The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Building Control Surveying was introduced last year with the support of the Trailblazer Group which included the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) and LABC which created the now nationally recognised and approved Building Control Apprenticeship Standard.

This aligns with a suite of qualifications developed in partnership with the CIOB, LABC and the University of Wolverhampton which cover a Level 3 Certificate a Level 4 and 5 Diploma and the recently launched Levy funded Level 6 BSc (Hons) Apprenticeship Degree.

Dr Paul Hampton, Associate Head of School of Architecture and Built Environment (Academic) at the University, said: “This provides the ideal platform to upskill and generate the next generation of qualified building control surveyors and working with internal and external curriculum development experts ensures the four year part-time degree is industry relevant and meaningful for the sector, whilst measuring the competency of every professional working within building control”.

“The School of Architecture and Built Environment was delighted to take part in this Trailblazer Group.

“This means that Local Authority members have been able to draw down on Apprenticeship levy funding to pay for their employees' formal education, from level four and five diplomas all the way up to the Degree in Building Control Surveying.

“These qualifications not only offer employers peace of mind that their staff are fully competent, they also offer learners a structured, accredited and recognised learning pathway that builds confidence, skills, knowledge and improved job prospects and security at each qualification level.”

LABC Deputy Chief Executive, Lorna Stimpson, said: "Three years ago – in 2016 – we realised we needed to do much more to improve the competence in our industry. The old established ways were clearly not working and we took the bold step of modernising how we did things by creating an online platform to make learning accessible to our national network of 3,500 building control professionals.

"LABC is determined to be an industry leader for learning and competence so I am delighted we have had such a high take up for the new degree course and our other qualifications."
