Artsfest Online: Dr Max Stewart in Conversation with Artist Allister Malcolm

Join Dr Max Stewart and glass artist Allister Malcolm as they delve into Allister's practice, current work and project at the White House Cone Museum of Glass, Stourbridge.

Allister Malcolm has become a renowned craftsman within his field. He is continuously expanding upon his portfolio of handmade, blown and contemporary glass artwork, welcoming all manor of commissioned work from corporate and private clients. His strong design sense combined with an impeccable standard of finish has created a dedicated collector base. All work is individually signed and dated by the artist.

“Acquiring the skills to produce handcrafted glass to a professional standard has been a long battle. This journey has taken me twenty years. I now strive to push this medium of glass and explore the versatility that it offers utilising all the skills I have gained over the years. Hopefully when you view the glass gallery it will convey the enjoyment it has given me to create these works!”.

In his PhD research study, Dr Max Stewart has investigated the colouring process of Amalric Walter (1870-1959) and places it in a modern studio context. It also repositions the historic and scientific analysis of pâte-de-verre from being a tiny esoteric process with a one hundred year-old history to one which is universal and spans three and half millennia. Stewart's work has been requested by major research institutes across the world including the Rakow Research Library in Corning NY, USA, the archives of the Musée de l’École de Nancy, and the Inventaire General de Lorraine, France. His PhD was the first joint PhD between Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University.

Dr Max Stewart is course leader in MA Design and Applied Arts at the University of Wolverhampton.
