We Back You: Iman takes the scenic route and gets first class results

16/07/2020

“I look at my experience with Clearing as taking the scenic route. The journey was paved with opportunities and the destination I've reached has surpassed my expectations."

Iman Hussain, 21 from Redditch, secured a place in Computer Science at the University through Clearing in 2017 when he fell short of one of his A Level grades.

Having achieved an A grade in Maths and a B grade in Biology at Sixth Form, his E grade in Chemistry meant that he wasn’t eligible for a place at any of his chosen universities.

He said: “The family lost a close family member when I was studying for my A Levels. It was upsetting and I lost a bit of my focus.  I had my heart set on becoming a scientist but when I didn’t get the grade I needed in Chemistry, I began to realise that I could still achieve my dream but perhaps I could look at other options.

“I’d always had a fascination with computers and the University of Wolverhampton looked really interesting because it has a strong computing background as well as good links with local and international companies.

“When applying through Clearing it was as simple as ringing up, explaining my results and talking about my ambitions to see if we were the right fit. What was nice about the process was they had staff on hand from the Faculty of Science and Engineering who were able to answer my questions quickly.  It made me feel valued and welcomed.”

Iman was offered a place through Clearing and graduated three years later with a First Class degree in Computer Science. He is now studying for a Master’s degree in the same subject focusing on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

“I look at my experience with Clearing as taking the scenic route. The journey was paved with opportunities and the destination I've reached has surpassed my expectations

“The University offered me a different experience, the pace was steady and I had lots of support.  I’ve still realised my ambition and I am now on a path which will see me changing things for the better and having impact.”

During his studies, the Master’s degree student has been working on a logistical tool for foodbanks to help redistribute their stocks using mobile phone apps and he has worked on a project to help people with visual impairments browse the web. Iman also won a £5,000 bursary courtesy of the Black Country Richardson family business.

He said: “Nothing was rushed and every lecture, tutorial and seminar added value and knowledge to the whole experience.  I don’t think I would see the same level of care at any other university towards its students.”
