Celebration of Women in Mathematics for International Women's Day

On Friday 6 March 2020 the University was delighted to host over 145 students and teachers from local schools to celebrate the contributions that women have made to mathematics.

This one day celebration was a joint initiative between the University of Wolverhampton and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP). Students from eleven local schools attended the event which included interactive workshops and a closing address from the Pro-vice Chancellor for Regional Engagement Prof. Nazira Karodia.

The students took three workshops which were themed to three famous female mathematicians.

Abigail Parkes delivered a workshop themed around Institute of Mathematics and it's Applications (IMA) gold medal recipient Prof. Reidun Twarock.

Jordan Brennan delivered a workshop themed around the contribution of Katherine Johnson who passed away recently.

Emily Rodden delivered a workshop themed around Ada Lovelace and mathematical algorithms.

The workshops were well received and included activities such as mathematical origami, the towers of Hanoi and counting the stitches in a quilt which has been hand made by Ann Battye from the FSE Deanery.

A team of student mentors assisted the event and acted as role models for the students in attendance. Feedback on the event was hugely positive and another event exploring careers in mathematics is already being planned.
