The University of Wolverhampton signed an official partnership agreement with one of the oldest technical universities in Poland recently – further expanding its reach across the globe.

The Silesian University of Technology (SUT) is the oldest technical university in Upper Silesia and one of the largest in the country. It was established in 1945 as a scientific and educational facility for the most industrialised area in Poland, and one of the most industrialised in Europe.

SUT is the only university in Silesia to be included in the prestigious group of 10 Polish universities, winners of the "Excellence Initiative-Research University" competition organised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) partnership outlines opportunities for collaboration across a number of disciplines for research, the potential for student exchange programmes and the development of Transnational Education (TNE) courses between SUT and the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton.

Dr Michael Gerges, Associate Dean Recruitment and International, in the University of Wolverhampton’s Faculty of Science & Engineering, said: "We are delighted to have signed a partnership agreement with the oldest technical university in Upper Silesia and one of ten research universities in the country.

“The partnership represents a key milestone for the University of Wolverhampton's global presence. Through this partnership we will continue working together with SUT colleagues to generate and exchange knowledge. This collaboration will establish a platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, ultimately benefiting our students, Faculty, and the wider community.  It is a crucial step in fulfilling our global commitment to provide our students with diverse academic opportunities and expand our research capabilities.

“This partnership would not have been possible without the incredible effort and dedication of the staff at both universities. Their hard work and commitment to excellence have been the driving force behind this collaboration, and we are deeply grateful for their contributions. Together, we will strive to achieve our common goals of promoting academic excellence, expanding research opportunities, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration."

Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, said: “For over 75 years our university has been an important institution of public life. It plays a significant cultural and opinion-forming role in the region. We are looking forward to further development of fruitful cooperation between our universities in the field of science and technology.

“As one of ten research universities in Poland we are very much open to international cooperation, to share our knowledge, to gain new experience and to grow together. Working together as a team of professionals we can achieve significant progress for the benefit of science, technology and our communities.

“It is very encouraging that, despite Brexit, we have managed to find ways to make this cooperation a reality and even more, we have turned it into a fruitful reality. Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank our colleagues from both the University of Wolverhampton and the Silesian University of Technology for initiating and developing this cooperation. I wish both of you further success and many new interesting initiatives.”
