The University of Wolverhampton’s Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies, in collaboration with the British Ravidassia Heritage Foundation, will be hosting an international seminar to highlight the life and philosophy of Guru Ravidass, a fifteenth century spiritual leader from India.

The seminar is a free event, open to academics and the general public and promises to be a lively day of discussion around the relevance of his teachings in the 21st century.

A number of key speakers will be travelling from across the world to share their research and insights, with the keynote being delivered by Professor Ronki Ram from Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. Professor Ronki Ram is Visiting Professor at the University’s Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies, and a world-renowned expert on the teachings of Guru Ravidass.

The multi award winning Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies is part of the School for Health and Society in the University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing.

Professor Damien Page, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Wolverhampton has the largest Panjabi community outside of London and this event will strengthen our community links both regionally and nationally. The Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies has become renowned for its tremendous community engagement as well as its constant outreach activities with the national, regional and international Sikh and wider Panjabi communities and we’re very much looking forward to hosting this important event.”

Head of School, Professor Farzad Amirabdollahian, said: “I am delighted that our School’s Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies is organising this event which will be situated in the heart of our local Panjabi community. Our School for Health and Society works closely with the local and wider Midlands Panjabi community on a number of projects relating to healthy lifestyles, as well as awareness of organ donation. The support from the Panjabi community has been outstanding.”

The free event will take place on Saturday 25 March, 11.00 am until 4.00 pm at the Guru Ravidass Community Centre, Dudley Road, Wolverhampton.
