Happy New Year. I hope you have had a restful break over the Christmas period and are looking forward to the term ahead. I am pleased to update you about arrangements for semester two, which begins on Monday, 24 January 2022 (this may be earlier for some courses).

Since I last wrote to you in December, the government has not made significant changes to Covid-19 restrictions, continuing its 'Plan B' guidance in response to the Omicron variant. Therefore, our plans for in-person teaching on campus for semester two remain unchanged, and we will be providing as much timetabled face-to-face teaching as possible. There have, however, been recent updates to the wearing of face-coverings in education settings, testing and self-isolation, which are outlined below.

This update includes information covering:
  • Face-coverings on campus
  • Covid-19 testing, isolation and reporting
  • Getting the vaccine and a vaccination status survey
  • Wellbeing support

Face-coverings on campus

The government has stated that face coverings should be worn when moving around campuses and in teaching settings. All students, staff and visitors should wear a face-covering when on campus if they can.

Face-coverings should be worn in:
  • Communal areas, e.g. libraries, corridors, stairwells and catering outlets.
  • Teaching settings, e.g. labs, workshops, classrooms and lecture theatres.
  • Office spaces, e.g. shared offices, student service areas and tutor offices.
You should wear a face-covering when moving around and seated in these areas.

Face coverings are also mandatory on all forms of public transport, including the University campus buses.

We understand that not everyone can wear a face-covering for medical reasons, but if you can, then you must do so to help protect others. You should consider wearing a visor if a face-covering is not appropriate for you.

Covid-19 testing, isolation and reporting

Before returning to campus, please familiarise yourself with the updated guidance for testing and self-isolating.

Symptom-free testing

Following the national government guidance, all students should take a test at home with a lateral flow device (LFD) test kit or at an in-person facility before returning to the University.

Once you've returned to campus, you should continue to test regularly, every three to four days. Test results should be reported online to NHS Test and Trace whether positive, negative or void.

From Tuesday, 11 January, people who receive a positive lateral flow test result will be required to self-isolate immediately and not take a confirmatory PCR test. This is a temporary measure while Covid-19 rates remain high across the UK.

More information is available on our Covid-19 Symptom-free testing webpage.

Self-isolating if you test positive

Anyone who receives a positive test result should self-isolate for ten days. After seven days, you may leave self-isolation if you receive two negative lateral flow test results, 24 hours apart on days six and seven. The day of your positive test result is day zero.

If you develop symptoms while you're self-isolating, the ten days restart from when your symptoms started.

Covid-19 reporting procedure

Students who receive a positive result from a lateral flow or PCR test should email: Covid-19help@wlv.ac.uk as soon as possible to inform our Health and Safety team. Please include your name, student number and a contact telephone number.

Once you have sent your email, you will receive an auto-response that contains a link to complete our online reporting form. The form should be completed straightaway.

More information and guidance is available on our Covid-19 Reporting Procedure webpage.

Returning from overseas

If you are returning to the UK from overseas, you must carefully check the Government website to see what you need to do before and after travelling. Please allow sufficient time in your plans to comply with any testing and quarantine requirements before returning to the University for the date on which you will be expected to be on the campus.

Vaccination status survey

The University continues to support the national vaccination campaign to protect our communities, family and friends from the virus. We encourage all staff and students to get fully vaccinated – including the booster jab.

To help plan for future vaccination services, the Department for Education is asking students to let us know their current vaccination status through this short survey.

Please complete the short survey. Responses are anonymous, and names or email addresses are not recorded.
Complete the survey

Vaccinations are FREE, and everyone living in the UK is eligible, whether it is your first dose or time for your booster.

It is quick and easy to get vaccinated at a local walk-in site, wherever you are in the UK.
