I hope you are all safe and well. I want to start this communication by introducing myself; I am Dr Ada Adeghe, an Associate Dean at the University of Wolverhampton, responsible for inclusivity.

In my role, I help shape the delivery of the University's Inclusive Curriculum Framework to close significant attainment gaps and support the success of all students. I also work with my colleagues to nurture a sense of belonging for all students and staff. 

As the University of Opportunity, we want to provide a higher education experience that equips you with everything you need to make a significant contribution to your community, both as a student and graduate.  

In this update, you will find opportunities for how you, as students, can contribute to the ongoing conversation around inclusivity at the University at our upcoming Inclusivity Conference, which is open to all students. We also have events coming up to help you plan for your future, including our Annual Research Conference and an exciting event with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to find out about new job opportunities in Wolverhampton.

University of Wolverhampton Inclusivity Conference 

The Inclusivity Conference will take place on Wednesday, 30 June (9 am – 1 pm) and Thursday, 1 July (9 am – 4.30 pm) and is open to all students and staff at the University. 

The key objective of the conference is for students and staff to come together to explore how inclusive practices can be embedded across the University, in line with Vision 2030 and its key theme of inclusive student success. 

I want to encourage all students to attend this event. It is a fantastic development opportunity and gives you the chance to contribute to the vision of our University and the development of teaching in your subject area.

Punjabi message from Giani Shyam Singh, Sikh Chaplain, about support for students from India 

Giani Shyam Singh, our Sikh Chaplain of the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy, has recorded a message for students from India in Punjabi. This message includes information on support available to those impacted by the Covid-19 situation in India, including the Students’ Union Pandemic Support Fund, which offers is a one-off £50 voucher help during this difficult time.

One year on - remembering George Floyd event 

On Tuesday, 25 May 2021, the University and Students' Union will mark the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd with a special online event about what his murder meant to people across the world, the impact that racism has in today's society, and what we must do to ensure that Black Lives Matter.

Opening of the Marches Centre for Excellence live event 

On Thursday, 20 May, the University will officially open the new £5m Marches Centre of Excellencein Health and Social Care at the Telford Campus. 

The Centre, which has received £3.5m Growth Deal funding from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), will enable students to gain hands-on, real-life experience of the profession they will enter and ensure they have the skills and knowledge to benefit employers.    

A small group of people will be present at the opening; students and staff can watch the event from 11 am via a live stream.

Working for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in Wolverhampton  

The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is opening a new second headquarters in Wolverhampton this year and is looking for people to join their team and help improve people's lives in communities across the country. 

The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government leads on a diverse and exciting range of work that impacts everyone. They are looking to recruit between 150 and 250 people for their new base in Wolverhampton and work with our students and staff.  

If you want to hear more about a career in the civil service, you can join an event with the senior leaders of MHCLG on Friday, 21 May, 11 am – 12 noon.

Annual Research Conference (ARC) 2021 

Taking place from Monday, 7 to Friday, 11 June, all students are invited to join the University of Wolverhampton Annual Research Conference 2021. 

The week aims to provide researchers and prospective researchers with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge and build their networks with other researchers. The programme also includes a workshop on developing a PhD proposal.  

All sessions are free to attend, whether you join one workshop or the entire week.

Covid-19 safety 

Whilst Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease in line with the Government’s roadmap, it is essential that everyone continues to play their part in keeping our University and wider community safe by following social distancing guidelines, wearing a face covering and taking part in regular testing.    

Please remember: 

  • You must follow Government guidelines when socialising with people you do not live with; this includes the 'Rule of 6' and 'Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air'.  
  • Everyone must follow our guidelines for safety on campus; this includes keeping two metres social distancing and wearing a face covering.  
  • Students are expected to have two Covid-19 tests a week while accessing the campus and living in accommodation.  
  • If you are feeling unwell or experiencing Covid-19 symptoms, do not come on to campus.Please follow the isolation and reporting guidelinesset out inourCovid-19 reporting procedures.   

The University will continue to review our on-campus safety measures in line with any changes to Government guidance.
