Student Update: Welcome to all new and returning students

Please be aware that this information was shared with students by email and correct at the time of sending. For the latest Covid-19 guidance, please visit our coronavirus webpages: www.wlv.ac.uk/coronavirus. We're looking forward to welcoming more students back to campus this year. Whether you're new to the University, you've been back recently, or it's been a while, you'll notice some recent developments in and around our buildings.

Our campuses are vibrant, friendly places with space to relax, study and connect with friends, but people make this University the unique place it is, so we can't wait to see you all for the new academic year.

I recently filmed a video message for students, including some information on how to stay safe and help protect our community when on campus.

It is a really exciting time for the University, but we also know it has been a difficult 18 months for everyone. Please be assured that the University is doing everything we can to keep everyone safe.

This update includes information covering:

  • WLV Welcome week and activities
  • Grab a jab on campus
  • Covid-19 safety on campus

This update contains lots of important information, so I would encourage you to read it carefully and ask you to consider bookmarking our Coronavirus webpages (www.wlv.ac.uk/coronavirus) so that you can stay up to date with the latest information.

WLV Welcome and induction

WLV Welcome and induction activities will start soon, with teaching due to commence for most students in the week beginning Monday, 27 September (this may be earlier for some courses).

Once you have enrolled and registered for your modules, you will have access to the WLV Welcome Topic in Canvas, our virtual learning environment. Here you'll find lots of helpful information ahead of teaching and the induction programme for your Faculty.

Welcome activities

With events hosted by the Students' Union, we encourage everyone to get involved, take the opportunity to build relationships and make the most of what student life offers.

A full line-up of Welcome activities is available on the Students' Union website. From get-togethers to parties, welfare events, workout sessions, karaoke nights and cooking tutorials, you'll find lots to get involved in this year.

Start Well Days

Start your journey right by meeting the University services and SU Societies that can support, entertain and help you grow outside of your studies. The Animal Man will also be on campus to introduce you to lots of cuddly creatures.

  • City Campus: Friday 24 September, 8 am – 4 pm
  • Walsall Campus: Tuesday 28 September, 11 am – 3 pm
  • Telford Campus: Wednesday 22 September, 11 am – 2 pm

You can find more University events, including online workshops with the library and careers team, on our website here: Upcoming events at the University of Wolverhampton.

Wellbeing checks at City and Walsall Campus

Final year Medical Science and Clinical Practice student Olivia Simpson is giving all students the opportunity to book a free Wellbeing Check appointment this semester.

The Wellbeing Checks consist of a free 20-minute consultation in a private room with no windows to ensure confidentiality. Appointments will take place every Thursday from 14 October and can be booked with Olivia at the Start Well Days or online, using the button below.

Grab a jab on campus

One of the key ways to help keep everyone safe and protect our community is to get the coronavirus vaccine.

Getting vaccinated will help to:

  • Avoid self-isolation: Double vaccinated adults are no longer required to self-isolate as long as they received their final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days before contact with a positive case.
  • Protect friends and family: vaccines dramatically reduce the risk of transmission and serious illness. Getting vaccinated will help protect the people you live and study with and the wider community.

If you haven't yet had both your vaccinations, there is an opportunity for you to grab a jab on campus during Welcome week.

  • City Campus: from 1 pm on Thursday 23 September to Sunday 26 September at the Wolves FC car park.
  • Walsall Campus: Weekdays, 9 am to 5 pm, from Monday 20 September to Friday 1 October in the Boulevard Lounge.
  • Telford Campus: Wednesday 22 September, from 11 am to 2 pm in front of the Angad Paul Building.

We have set up a dedicated coronavirus vaccine webpage to help you stay up to date with the latest information for booking your appointment and walk-in vaccination opportunities close to our campuses.

Safety on campus

The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic means that studying on campus is somewhat different. The University remains committed to ensuring that students have the best learning experience possible, but we need to place the safety of our community at the heart of everything we do.

To help ensure our campuses remain Covid-informed, the University has introduced a two-tier alert level system for on-campus safety guidelines. The new system consists of two levels – High and Medium.

We are currently operating at the Medium alert level, where wearing face coverings and giving everyone plenty of space on campus is encouraged but not mandated by Government guidance. Should this change, we will move to the High alert level.

Everyone accessing the University campuses should:

  • Behave responsibly, following our safety on campus guidelines and government guidance, observing the measures in place to ensure our campuses are safe and Covid-informed.
  • Wear a face-covering and give everyone plenty of space when moving around campus and in busy communal areas (e.g.,  catering outlets and corridors).
  • Clean workspaces before and after use, including the keyboard and mouse in PC areas.

Please be aware that in line with Government guidance, there is currently no requirement to follow one way systems on campus and no restrictions on the number of people accessing lifts, staff kitchens and WC facilities.

More information can be found on our safety on campus webpage.
