Students get work experience at computing conference

University of Wolverhampton students gained some vital work experience skills recently at an international conference in Amsterdam, Holland.

Three second year Computer Science students volunteered to work as crew behind the scenes at GOTO Amsterdam recently.

GOTO is a four day enterprise software development conference designed for team leads, architects and project management organised for developers, by developers.

Student volunteers get the opportunity to gain 12 hours work experience whilst getting the opportunity to attend conference sessions and social events for free.

As part of a crew of 30 people, the students - Chloe Allen-Ede, Ricki West and Satwant Kaur, stayed at a youth hostel in Amsterdam and spent their time packing goody bags, directing conference delegates and helping with refreshments.

Dr Herbert Daly, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Wolverhampton, said: "Computer Science is a popular subject at the moment. Technology shapes and redefines the world around us, from Drones and Self Driving cars to Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing, it is a very exciting time to be able to immerse yourself in these stimulating ideas.

"We have recently recruited new staff to enhance our research profile and importantly the experience of our students. Our students are empowered shape their own learning, organising groups attending events and working closely with our industrial partners and getting the opportunity to attend a world class computing conference is vital experience for them."

Chloe said: "The entire trip was amazing; from the talks we watched, the people we networked with to the City Amsterdam itself! I particularly loved the range of different talks that were offered at the conference, I attended talks on AI technology, quantum computing, cyber security, good programming practices and many more which expanded knowledge learnt on my degree as well as giving me the opportunities to learn new things. I also liked the community feeling that we got from working with the other crew members from around the world - it hardly seemed like work while we were there."

Satwant said: "Working at the conference was a great experience and I would highly recommend anyone to have a go.

"I got to meet interesting and inspirational people from all over the world working as crew. I would advise anyone to do the same."
