BUILD THE FUTURE – Gemma means business with Degree Apprenticeship

07/02/2021

“The Degree Apprenticeship option was a no-brainer because it gives that route link between practical and theory based knowledge.”

Gemma Staite, 36 from Wolverhampton, has shown she means business by studying for a Senior Leaders Master’s Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton.

Gemma is a Senior Biomedical Scientist in the Pathology Department at New Cross Hospital, Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) and is in the second year of her two year course which is funded by RWT through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Having always been interested in learning about the body, Gemma originally wanted to be a Forensic Pathologist and studied Biology and Chemistry at A Level as well as Environmental Studies and Psychology.  Her results were not as good as she had hoped but she went on to study for a Degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Wolverhampton.

During her first year of the degree, she got the job of Trainee Biomedical Scientist at RWT and continued to study for the course part time for three years before studying for a Master’s Degree in Molecular Medical Microbiology.

Gemma has worked at New Cross Hospital for seventeen years focusing mainly on looking at infection and determining which antibiotic treatments are likely to work but she is keen to progress further and boost her promotion prospects by equipping herself with leadership skills.

She said: “I love the science but I want to progress as far as I can, so I am keen to prepare myself for higher grade jobs. The Degree Apprenticeship option was a no-brainer because it gives that route link between practical and theory based knowledge.

“I’m currently seconded into a new role for six months as Operational Lead for Microbiology and we are in the middle of a merger so I’m able to really put my leadership learning into practice.

“There are HR modules on the course such as staff engagement and wellbeing as well as modules looking at procurement and finance – all of which I will find useful in my new role at work as I’ve been involved with sourcing new equipment and integrating staff.

“I would really recommend a Degree Apprenticeship, not only is it an opportunity for RWT to grow its staff and get the best out of them, there’s also lots of support on offer from both the employer and the University.”
