BUILD THE FUTURE – Oliver accelerates his career with a Degree Apprenticeship

11/02/2021

“Not only does my employer fund the Apprenticeship, they give me time off to study.  This is a great opportunity for me - the next logical step on my career path.”

Oliver Pearson, 26 from Holmes Chapel near Crewe, is on the right road to accelerate his career by studying for a Degree Apprenticeship in Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton, with his studies funded by his employer, Bentley Motors Limited through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Oliver, who is currently a Body Problem Solver at Bentley Motors Limited, started to study A Levels at Sixth Form but realised he wanted to pursue a different route. He started work at a local specialist Porsche and Ferrari garage before joining the Craft Apprenticeship scheme at Bentley, securing BTEC, Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications in Mechanical Engineering.

Oliver now works in the Launch Quality Centre at Bentley Motors and has been in the role for two years. He is in the first year of a two-year part-time course where he spends one day a week studying.

He said: “I’m passionate about cars and find it easy to get lost in research, so when I was offered the chance of studying for a Degree Apprenticeship I jumped at the chance.  Not only does my employer fund the Apprenticeship, they give me time off to study.  This is a great opportunity for me and is the next logical step on my career path.

“I always wanted to develop further and the HNC gave me a good grounding to study at the next level. I have a five-year development plan and the Degree Apprenticeship was the logical next step for me, allowing me to look at promotion in the future as well as focusing on advancing technologies in the motor industry.

“It was daunting going back into education after four years away, but the lecturers at the University have been really supportive and I’m taking learning from my modules, especially in relation to quality and process, into the workplace to improve my day-to-day working practice.”
