The University of Wolverhampton and Compton Care have entered into a partnership to form a brand-new ethical fashion project called ‘Remade in Wolves.’

University students studying Fashion & Textiles at the University’s Wolverhampton School of Art attended a series of workshops this week (September 21-23) and visited Compton Care’s flagship Retail Plus store in the city centre to practise the new skills they have learnt.

The workshops focused on raising awareness of ethical fashion, such as upcycling and fast fashion, in addition to styling.

Students had also taken part in a styling workshop, dressing mannequins in the windows of the large retail store, in addition to an education session on ‘fast fashion’ - looking at how to reduce waste created by the mass production of cheap clothing.

Channon Hale, Level 6 Fashion student said: “I was so surprised when we were told that 40 per cent of the donated materials were rags and not suitable for use.

“When we walked in, there was a mound of donated clothing and materials ready for us to upcycle, turn from rags to riches and give them a new lease of life for customers. We’ve made lots of new creations – a favourite being bags out of denim jeans. It’s been amazing to work together and put our skills to where they’re needed most.”

Lucy Wilkes, Level 6 Fashion student said: “I’m so proud that we’ve been able to put our skills to good use for such a fantastic cause.

“It’s quite overwhelming when you get to see the final product and getting that ‘Wow! I’ve made that’ kind of feeling and you get a real sense of personal achievement when a customer wants to buy it.”
