Initial Teacher Education CPD

We provide CPD courses that make clear contributions to individual and organisational development. Drawing on the Teacher Standards' as appropriate, we encourage participants to develop their skills as effective teachers by supporting the development of critical and reflective dialogue in relation to their practice. We appreciate that partnership working is key to school improvement.  We therefore recognise our unique and distinctive service in providing our partners with high quality CPD courses that enhance individual and school improvement across all teaching career phases.  Our partnerships with regional  schools, academies and colleges has appeal because of our focus on research informed teaching, access to research findings and the development of reflective practitioners through an academic overlay to in-house training.  In all cases our CPD provision is tailored to meet the needs of schools.

The following activities can be accessed as standalone 20 credit modules and can also be combined, leading to a postgraduate certificate (60 credits). They can also be accessed as non-accredited activities tailored to needs of schools, academies and other educational organisations.

7SE007. Professional Development: The Innovative Teacher

This module builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding you gained during your initial teacher training. You will be revisiting some of the content of your training course but in the light of your experiences as a newly qualified teacher working in a school context. You will be encouraged to take an innovative approach to deepening your professional skills and improving pupils learning. You will attend four taught sessions but the major proportion of the work associated with this module will take place in your own school context in the form of a small scale classroom investigation. You will use your skills as a reflective practitioner to evaluate critically the extent to which you facilitated pupils' progress in learning.

7SE008. Professional Development: The Inclusive Teacher

This module builds on your knowledge, skills and understanding gained within a relevant teaching and learning setting. You will be critically reflecting on some of your previous experiences and learning, whilst exploring new material, research and engagement within a special educational needs and disability (SEND) or alternative education provision setting. You will be encouraged to take an innovative approach to deepening your professional knowledge, understanding and skills in promoting pertinent progress in pupils with specific learning difficulties, special needs or medical conditions that can impact on their attainment within education. You will attend taught sessions but the major proportion of the work associated with this module will take place in your SEND setting and/or own school or education context in the form of a case study and small classroom investigation. You will use your skills as a reflective practitioner to evaluate critically the extent to which you facilitated pupils' progress in learning.

7SE009. Professional Development: The Pastoral Teacher

This module builds on your knowledge, skills and understanding gained within a relevant teaching and learning setting. You will be critically reflecting on some of your previous experiences and learning, whilst exploring new material, research and engagement within a pastoral setting. You will deepen your awareness of your responsibility for addressing the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs of your students. You will be encouraged to take an innovative approach to deepening your professional knowledge, understanding and skills to develop your practice in nurturing students' holistic development. You will attend taught sessions but the major proportion of the work associated with this module will take place in your own education context in the form of a case study. You will use your skills as a reflective practitioner to critically evaluate your chosen aspect of the pastoral care in your educational setting.

Mentoring Modules

7SE010. Professional Development in Mentoring: Beginning Practice in Mentoring

This module enables you to articulate, exemplify and critically evaluate a range of mentoring practices.  You will be expected to show a critical awareness of appropriate literature, theory and practice and demonstrate a critical awareness of the implications of mentoring within your professional context.

7SE011. Professional Development in Mentoring: Developing Practice in Mentoring

This module builds upon knowledge and experience of mentoring in schools. You will critically reflect on mentoring theory and critically appraise your professional practice.  Working with a subject coaching mentor from another school and a university verifier you will deepen your understanding of mentoring theory and practice.  You will have the opportunity to share good practice by contributing to subject mentor training sessions as a presenter or facilitator. You will use your skills as a reflective practitioner to develop strategies to enhance your mentoring practice in school.

7SE012. Professional Development in Mentoring: Leading Practice in Mentoring

This module builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding you have gained in your mentoring role.  You will be critically reflecting on some of your previous experiences and learning, and deepening your professional knowledge, understanding and skills in a wider context.  You will be encouraged to take an innovative approach to guiding others in their development of mentoring practice and will use your skills as a reflective practitioner to lead mentoring practice in school.
