Post-Compulsory Education CPD

These courses support participants to gain and/or develop further the knowledge, skills and personal qualities required of a professional teacher in the post-compulsory sector. They draw upon professional standards as appropriate to develop concepts, skills and strategies necessary to enhance performance in the PCE sector.  The courses also support the development of critical and reflective dialogue in lifelong education and training. Students are supported to develop strategies to assess their own performance, strengths, weaknesses and development needs in order to actively engage in their own continuing professional development.

The courses can be offered as accredited or non-accredited CPD.

Level 6

6PC019 Introduction to Literacy Studies (20 credits).

The module aims to provide students with an understanding of literacy theories and frameworks. Students will consider theories and principles relating to language acquisition and learning, theories and principles relating to literacy learning and development and how language can be described and analysed. Students will also consider the processes involved in the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for literacy learners.

Level 7

7PC003 Identity and the management of changing roles in Lifelong Education and Professional Practice (20 credits).

This module is designed to facilitate students’ exploration of the different forces at work on practitioners' and managers' identities in lifelong education and professional practice settings. Students will share experiences and be supported to analyse the different (sometimes contradictory) cultural strands evident in their workplace. Theoretical perspectives and readings will assist students to reflect critically on their work environments, enabling them to explore principles and values and empowering them in their roles as managers within their individual professional practice setting.

7ED005 Mentoring: Critical Dialogue and Professional Practice (20 credits).

This module is designed to critically explore the practice of mentoring within the context of professional development in education and training.

7ED006 Mentoring: A collaborative and reflective relationship (20 credits).

This module is designed to enable the mentor to critically explore the implications of mentoring relationships with emphasis on supporting the reflective practice skills of their mentees 

7PC001 Sustaining Criticality in Professional Practice (20 credits).

This module is designed to support ongoing critically reflective practice. It is also about critiquing models of critical reflective practice. You will explore the de-/ re-constructing of professionalism and the enactment of professional identities. The module therefore includes reflections on participants’ journeys in their particular sector (Lifelong Education and Professional Practice).
