Latest Library Space Improvements
Over the summer, we've been making several improvements across our libraries to create more study space, improve access to resources and technology, and make our library environments even more welcoming places to learn.
Many of these changes have been shaped by student feedback, helping us to focus on the things that matter most to the people who use our libraries every day.
Walsall Library: More Space to Study
To support courses delivered at Walsall Campus, we've reorganised parts of our print collection to make sure resources are available where they're needed most.
As part of this work, the Library has worked with Estates and Facilities colleagues to reconfigure shelving on the first floor, improving accessibility and opening up some of the tighter walkways within the library. The changes have made it easier to move around the space while also creating room for new study areas.
Students can now make use of the following new study spaces:
- Eight individual study carrels
- Two two-person study booths
- Six high-back study chairs with integrated desks and power points
- A large study table with task lighting and power access
We've also increased LapSafe capacity on the first floor, making it easier to borrow a laptop when you need one.
What's Next for Walsall?
We're continuing to look at ways to improve the library experience, with plans to:
- Improve study pods and study rooms
- Refresh library signage
- Introduce more greenery throughout the space
We'll be asking for student feedback as these plans develop, so keep an eye out for opportunities to share your ideas.
Harrison Library: New Facilities and Creative Spaces
At Harrison Library, we're refreshing parts of the second floor, including replacing the shelving used to house the 800s sequence collection with newer, more modern shelving.
Work is also underway to create a new special collections space on the first floor. We'll be sharing more information about this soon.
We've expanded our LapSafe provision at City Campus too, helping to ensure that a short-loan laptop is available whenever you need one.
The Library Gallery Is Now Open
In partnership with the School of Creative Industries, we've opened the Library Gallery on the ground floor of Harrison Library.
The space will host a programme of exhibitions throughout the academic year, showcasing student work and creative projects from across the University. Whether you're visiting to study or simply passing through, there's always something new to discover.
Help Shape What's Next
We're not stopping here. Over the coming year, we'll be looking at how we can improve group study spaces and facilities across our libraries.
We'll be asking for your feedback on study rooms, pods and shared learning spaces, so look out for opportunities to tell us what works well, what could be better and what you'd like to see in the future.
