The History and War Studies degree provides graduates with the knowledge of the issues, themes, debates and developments related to the analysis of history and war. Our graduates are equipped to develop and sustain debates on the strategic, ethical and philosophical uses of war as well as understanding the full historical contexts within which conflict arises.

Alongside subject-specific knowledge, you will develop a wide range of key transferable skills including enhanced communication, analytical and technological proficiency. What happens on the course?

The History and War Studies degree at Wolverhampton enables you to engage in debates about a diverse range of historically contested issues and conflicts under the guidance of research-active, internationally recognised scholars.

Studying this degree enables you to explore historical and contemporary wars and conflicts from a wide and geographically diverse range of case studies, alongside the social and political histories of empire and migration, consumerism and activism.

The course actively encourages you to develop your own interests and you will investigate the forces of social, economic, political and cultural change that have given us the world in which we live today and be equipped to develop and sustain debates on the strategic, ethical and philosophical uses of war.

As well as subject-specific knowledge, you will develop a wide range of key transferable skills including enhanced communication, analytical and digital literacy.  At the completion of the course you will:

  1. Have an awareness and critical understanding of the problematic nature of interpreting the past and the strategic, ethical and philosophical theories underpinning the subject;
  2. Have an understanding of the varieties of approaches to analysing historical events, the concept of war and war’s implications;
  3. Be familiar with a variety of historical and war-related case studies;
  4. Be able to address historical and contemporary problems in depth using primary and secondary sources;
  5. Be able to use appropriate technologies in digitally literate and enterprising ways to support research, process data and produce written work and presentational material to a variety of audiences;
  6. Have a greater understanding of the value of civic responsibility in your outlook toward and relationships with others in a global context.

# Undergraduate part-time fees for 50% rate of study

Typical entry requirement: 96 UCAS points

  • A Levels - grades CCC / BCD
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM
  • BTEC L3 Diploma - grades DD
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)
  • T Levels with an overall grade of Pass and a minimum grade of C in Core.
  • Other Requirements

    Students must usually have studied for a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, we will consider applications from mature students who do not have two years of post-16 study, where they have relevant work experience. Please see http://wlv.ac.uk/mature for further information.
