- “Having chosen to undertake a degree at the University of Wolverhampton, I was happy to have my expectations exceeded on almost all accounts. A key focus during the course was the ability to fully understand the industry and also to gain the skills and knowledge that set me above others during the recruitment process.” - Amie
- “I am convinced that the degree, and the knowledge I gained through it, gave me a fantastic platform for my development and opened up great career opportunities. I owe a considerable amount of my success to my lecturers. Combined with an unforgettable social life and lifelong friends, the years I spent there benefit me every day." - Louis
Hear from alumni, Charlotte Turley:
I loved the field trips and the opportunities to connect with businesses through the many events and networking opportunities. However, my favourite memory is getting the letter of acceptance off the Disney World company which has always been my dream job and something that I never thought I could achieve. Having the support off my tutors especially Amanda who I met on day one and was so supportive of my dreams and achievements so it was great to be able to share my news with her and make her proud. I made some great friends who were extremely supportive throughout the whole process and we would be able to bounce ideas off each other and also had some great nights out, I remember one in particular for Halloween, which pushed me to be more social.
How did your course benefit your career?
At the beginning of my course, I was working in the retail industry as a supervisor at B&M and as I struggle with Anxiety, I did not want to make the career change as it meant a new start and learning something new. Starting the course especially with a placement year gave me the knowledge and encouragement to find a job within the hospitality industry which has led to my career development and allowed me to gain my Deputy Managers position. In addition, it also allowed me to apply for the position at Disney World which was an amazing opportunity.
What are the key responsibilities in your current job?
My main responsibility is leading and supporting the team at Holiday Inn Express, a busy city centre hotel in Birmingham. I am the main point of contact for the team and conduct recruitment, the on boarding process, team training and development and team conduct. I also support with ordering, contractors, rota scheduling and anything else that is needed throughout the day. I support my operations manager with anything that he needs as we run an extremely busy operation and support with any audits or visitors.
What would you consider to be your career highlight to date?
My career highlight would be developing one of our team members Amz. Amz started with us as a part time team member and due to his work ethic, he began to gain bigger contracts. I started working aside with Amz and created him a training programme which led to him getting a Team Leader role at our hotel. It was a proud moment to see him develop due to the training and guidance I provided and it is great to see how he has progressed over the year.
What advice would you give a potential student who is considering studying at the University?
University is a great experience that will allow you to grow and develop. When I applied for my position, it was very competitive however, having a degree gave me the competitive advantage over other candidates as it demonstrated that I was hard working and had a range of knowledge. I would advise getting a job within the industry to gain practical experience to support your learning. You might also consider whether a full time of part time route would be better for you as it can be very stressful working full time as well as full time education.
In just 15-30 words, describe your experience of the University?
It was a great experience that I feel allowed me to develop from a student to a woman in business. I feel a lot more confident, educated and proud because I was determined to achieve something and I made it happen which is also due to being a student at the University of Wolverhampton.
