This course gives you a genuine, structured route in — a dedicated Foundation Year to build the maths, physics, computing and academic skills you need, followed by exactly the same three-year honours degree everyone else on this course studies.

Built for people who didn't take the "traditional" route in — Whether you didn't study the right combination of science subjects at school, took time out after GCSEs, or are returning to education as a mature student with work experience, this course is designed around getting you into engineering, not filtering you out of it.


A dedicated engineering module in your very first year — Unlike a generic access or foundation course, your Foundation Year includes a specific engineering module alongside maths, physics and computing, so you're getting a genuine taste of the discipline from day one, not just general academic preparation.
Prepare for Foundation Year days for anyone short of 48 points — If you don't currently meet the entry tariff, there's a structured route to help close that gap rather than a straightforward rejection.


The same professional guarantee at the end of it — Complete the Foundation Year and progress through the degree, and you graduate from a course accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), with a guaranteed professional placement built in — the destination is identical, only the starting point is different.

What happens on the course?

  • Year 1 — Foundation Year. Build the fundamentals: core maths and physics, hands-on computing skills, and academic reading, writing and communication skills that university study demands — plus a dedicated engineering module that gives you a genuine first taste of the discipline before you specialise.
  • Year 2 — Foundations and Fundamentals. Join the standard BEng cohort and dive into solid mechanics and thermodynamics, get introduced to CAD, and take your first steps into CFD and FEA, while working on industry-informed projects tackling real challenges like sustainable manufacturing.
  • Year 3 — Specialisation and Depth. Go deeper into advanced computational analysis, and start designing and manufacturing components using Additive Layer Manufacturing and high-speed machining, alongside an enterprise project exploring specialisms like structural integrity or thermal management with other engineers.
  • Year 4 — Application and Innovation. Work on new models and functional parts using metal 3D-printing — including titanium and copper components — apply CAM and Industry 4.0 principles, and complete an individual innovation project presented at our annual Innovations Unleashed showcase.

 

Placements on the course

Every student is guaranteed a professional placement as part of this degree — including everyone who joins via the Foundation Year. Your placement sits within the honours stage of the course (Years 2–4), so completing your Foundation Year first doesn't mean missing out on it or getting a reduced version of it.

  • The same guarantee, the same experience. Placement structure, timing and support are identical to the direct-entry route — starting a year earlier academically doesn't mean a lesser placement experience later.
  • A real workplace, not a simulation. Your placement gives you first-hand experience of a genuine professional work environment, so you graduate already knowing what's expected of you in a real workplace.
  • Broader than just mechanical engineering. Placements won't always sit directly within a mechanical engineering role, but they're chosen to build the transferable workplace skills — professionalism, communication, teamwork, time management — that every engineering employer expects from day one.

  • Demonstrate practical, hands-on engineering skills — manufacturing, materials handling, risk management and quality — alongside the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
  • Conceptualise, plan and deliver a complex individual project, supported by a technical literature review and critical milestones, and present it as a professional technical report.

    Prepare for Foundation Pathway: - We will consider applicants who have not achieved level 3 qualifications if you have a keen interest in this subject area or hold relevant experience. To receive an offer through this route you will be required to successfully attend and pass a Prepare for Foundation event. This is a one-day programme which is designed to assess your keen interest or recent experience in the subject, through a written assessment and a variety of activities. During the event you will have the opportunity to ask questions, be introduced to studying a higher education foundation course and meet staff and fellow students. If you would like more advice and guidance about this admissions pathway, please contact Gateway to discuss and support you making an application to us.
