BSc (Hons) Fire and Rescue with Foundation Year

The aim of this module is to equip students with a fundamental understanding of Fire Engineering Science principles involving Hydraulics, Combustion, Heat, Electricity, Special Hazards and Fire Dynamics. The module covers basic principles and will prepare students for application of this understanding in subsequent modules of the programme

The aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of basic mathematical skills and academic report/essay writing skills and abilities required for the degree programme.

This module will examine the range of individual and societal impacts of fire on firefighters, individuals and groups in the built environment. The module will consider the effects of fire on elements of building construction, the active and passive measures taken to protect buildings and strategies to reduce risk in buildings for both domestic and commercial use. Students will gain experience and skills in developing and presenting real risk management strategies that will support the fire and rescue service mission to save life and prevent damage to property.

This module will examine the underlying concepts and principles of leadership and command within the Fire and Rescue Service. It will also address issues of management when related to the role of a fire commander. This module will engage students in the different approaches to leading and managing people in the workplace and to the concepts of command in a risk critical environment.

This module will give students an overview and understanding of the fire and rescue services within the United Kingdom. It will examine the political, social, economic and industrial relations environment in which the service exists. It will  detail the organisation and operational contexts and procedures including prevention, protection and response modes of service delivery and give the student the opportunity to explore current issues and undertake horizon scanning activities for future management of the service

This module will examine and critically analyse the policies and practices of emergency planning. The module will engaged students in an analysis of planning and preparedness for emergencies, inter-agency working and the legislative framework. The module will then consider the responses to emergencies and critically consider real events that can be classified as: natural; man-made; and criminal / terrorist related. The module will finally consider how agencies structure their approaches to command, public awareness raising and recovery.

This module will provide an introduction to forensic science and fire scene examination. It will aim to give students the knowledge and understanding of contemporary investigation techniques to allow them to identify the causes of accidental and deliberate fires at a supervisory level within the fire and rescue service.

Fire-fighters, commanders and hazmat specialists within the Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) face a variety of unknown risks when attending incidents. One of the potentially most significant of these risks is exposure to a range of hazardous materials. This module will review relevant processes and principles of the natural environment, outline what constitutes a hazardous substance and synthesize the different types and classes of relevant materials. The module thus explains how hazardous materials behave in the environment and how they can be effectively managed during an incident. A risk-based approach will be taken throughout the module and relevant case studies will be utilised where appropriate.

This module will build upon the level 4 Introduction to Fire Leadership and Command. It will broaden the concepts of leadership and management and examine how fire commanders need to operate in a changing and pressurised environment. This module will develop the students understanding of people-related management when related to a leadership role in the fire & rescue service.

This module aims to : Provide students with knowledge of the operational requirements of a fire and rescue service in an aviation environment and an ability to evaluate and interpret these within the context of airport operations.  Provide students with knowledge of the operational requirements of a fire and rescue service in an industrial environment and an ability to evaluate and interpret these within the context of industrial operations.  Assess the operational requirements of airport, industrial and local authority fire and rescue services through a problem-solving approach and present the outcomes in a structured and coherent manner.

This module will examine and analyse the law relating to the fire and rescue services. It will provide students with the requisite knowledge of the primary and secondary legislation relating to the fire service. The module will consider relevant legislation, for example Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004, Fire and Rescue Services (Emergencies) (England) Order 2007, Civil contingencies Act 2005, etc. The module will also consider the Integrated Risk Management Planning process, Health and Safety, public liability and duty of care.

This module will examine the development and application of fire safety legislation, guidance and design in the built environment and promote recognition of the role played by fire safety professionals in the safe planning, design and management of buildings. It will demonstrate and explain the primary concepts involved in building design, layout and testing, with regard to maintaining the life safety of occupants and providing a safe environment for firefighters. Particular emphasis will be placed on the systems and features of a fire safety design package and the deployment of these systems in the safe management of buildings. 

This module is designed to prepare fire & rescue students for working collaboratively with other agencies and organisations. The importance of effective partnership working, for example at critical incidents or with vulnerable people will be critically examined drawing upon real-life case studies and examples

The module will consider the aspects of health, safety and welfare as it applies to operations on the incident ground. It prepares students for the management of health and safety in real world contexts.

This module will build upon the level 5 Operational Fire Leadership and Command. It will examine emergent strategies that reflect the challenging context in which the fire service operates: how can strategic management deliver an effective service.  The module will take students beyond the normal concepts of management and leadership and examine how, and importantly why, leaders need to think beyond their levels of authority to deliver challenging targets and strategic outcomes.
