What happens on the course?

This is a four-year version of the standard degree (eight years part-time), with a foundation year at the start designed to get you ready for everything that follows.

Year 1: your foundation year

You'll build the core academic skills every built environment student needs — Foundation Mathematics I and II, communication and study skills, and problem solving in science and technology — alongside subject-specific grounding in Orientation to Infrastructure and the Built Environment and Practical Engineering Science. By the end of the year, you'll have the numeracy, research and communication skills to succeed on a demanding professional degree, whatever your starting point.

Years 2 to 4: the property management and real estate degree

From here, you follow the same route as the standard course. You'll build technical grounding in construction technology, law and digital construction, then move into the specialist heart of the subject: investment appraisal and property valuation, residential and commercial property management, construction law, and the strategic role of real estate as a corporate asset.

  • Investment appraisal and valuation: Learn to identify an investor's aims and match them to the right appraisal method, using computer spreadsheets to present and solve real investment problems.
  • Residential and commercial property management: Negotiate rent reviews, lease renewals and covenants in class workshops on behalf of landlords and tenants, using real legislation and case law.
  • Independent research: A substantial dissertation in your final year lets you research a real estate or property management topic of your own choosing, from question to conclusion.

Assessment throughout mirrors how the profession actually works: computer-aided assessment, work-based competence tasks, round-table discussions, written reports, presentations and formal examinations.

    Prepare for Foundation Pathway: - We will consider applicants who have not achieved level 3 qualifications if you have a keen interest in this subject area or hold relevant experience. To receive an offer through this route you will be required to successfully attend and pass a Prepare for Foundation event. This is a one-day programme which is designed to assess your keen interest or recent experience in the subject, through a written assessment and a variety of activities.
