Why choose this course?

7th in the UK for Architecture, Building and Planning (Daily Mail University Guide 2027)

This course puts teaching quality to work training the next generation of chartered surveyors. A career in real estate means advising on everything from development opportunities and landlord/tenant disputes to multi-million-pound investment decisions. This course is built to get you there, combining a solid grounding in property law, construction, valuation and sustainability with the communication and negotiation skills the profession runs on.

  • Aligned to the standards that matter: Course content is closely aligned to RICS and CIOB standards, giving you a direct line of sight to Chartered Surveyor status via the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) after graduation.
  • Learn on real properties, not textbook examples: You'll work with real subject properties and real case studies, not hypothetical scenarios — many led by practitioners currently working in the sector.
  • Get out of the lecture theatre: Site visits to towns and cities across the region show you how the industry actually operates in different markets, and put you face to face with practitioners.
  • Built-in industry experience: A guaranteed Professional Development Placement is built into every degree, so you graduate with genuine workplace experience already on your CV.

What's unique about this course?

Unlike many single-subject property courses, you'll study your first year alongside students from across the built environment — construction, surveying and digital construction — before specialising. That means you graduate understanding how property managers, surveyors and construction professionals actually work together on a live project, which is exactly how the industry operates.

  • Real-world assessment, not just real-world examples: Case studies and assessments are built around real property scenarios, so the skills you're assessed on are the skills you'll use in practice from day one.
  • Investment appraisal and valuation with real tools: From non-discounting and discounting appraisal methods to spreadsheet-based investment modelling, you'll build the technical, numerate skills that set surveyors apart in a competitive graduate market.
  • A guaranteed placement, not a possibility: Every student on this course is guaranteed a Professional Development Placement as standard — it's built into the degree, not an optional extra you have to compete for.
  • Practise the conversations you'll actually have: You'll negotiate rent reviews, lease renewals and covenants in class workshops on behalf of landlords and tenants — a rehearsal for the client conversations you'll be having as a graduate surveyor.

What happens on the course?

Across three years (or five, studying part-time), you'll build from the fundamentals of the built environment through to the specialist skills of a working property professional — always with a practical, client-facing edge.

Year 1: building your foundations

You'll get to grips with the fundamentals shared across the built environment — construction technology, law and procurement, business economics and digital construction tools such as VR and AI in the built environment — alongside academic and professional development skills that set you up for the rest of the course.

Year 2: developing your specialism

This is where property management and real estate come into sharper focus. You'll get hands-on with the tools and techniques of investment appraisal and valuation, using computer spreadsheets to present, analyse and solve real investment problems. You'll also:

  • Study residential property management, including landlord and tenant legislation, case law and the practicalities of managing shared residential space.
  • Explore construction law and its legal, personal and organisational implications for built environment professionals.
  • Take on your guaranteed Professional Development Placement, putting your learning into a live professional context.

Investment Appraisal and Professional Practice in Building Surveying and Property Management sit at the heart of this year, alongside an optional strand in leadership or employment skills.

Year 3: mastering the profession

Your final year moves into strategic and commercial territory. You'll examine corporate real estate as a strategic business asset, manage the complexities of commercial leases and rent negotiations, and study contract administration and dispute resolution — the mechanisms professionals use when property deals don't go to plan. Sustainability runs through the whole year, reflecting its growing weight in real-world property decisions.

  • Independent research, your way: A substantial dissertation lets you research a real estate or property management topic of your own choosing in depth, from identifying the research question through to conclusions and recommendations.
  • Commercial Property Management: Learn how to identify a landlord or tenant's investment aims and match them to the right investment instruments and appraisal method.

Throughout the course, assessment reflects how the profession actually works: computer-aided assessment, work-based competence tasks, round-table discussions, written reports, presentations and formal examinations, alongside the practical, negotiation-style workshops described above.

Placements on the course

Every student on this course is guaranteed a Professional Placement, built into your degree as standard. We don't see this as an 'add-on' — it's part of how we do degrees differently at Wolverhampton.

As part of your second year, you'll undertake a Professional Development Placement — a short, structured period of professional experience linked to a credit-bearing module on your course. It's designed to give you focused, practical experience of the property sector and to build the employability skills that make graduates stand out.

  • Short duration: A condensed period of work-like experience during term time, rather than a long block placed alongside your studies.
  • Academic integration: Always linked to your coursework, assessments or professional development modules — not a bolt-on activity.
  • Project-based learning: You'll work on specific tasks or research with a real organisation, giving you something concrete to show for it.
  • Flexible format: Placements can be in-person, remote, hybrid or virtual, reflecting how the modern property sector actually works.
  • Skill development: Communication, negotiation, teamwork and problem-solving — the skills employers consistently ask graduates for.

Without work experience, 52% of graduate employers rate a candidate's chances of receiving a job offer as 'not very likely' (ratemyplacement.co.uk) — a guaranteed placement gives you a real head start before you've even graduated.

Employability on the course

This course is designed from day one to prepare you for a career as a property professional, not just to teach the theory of one.

  • Extended induction: A period at the start of your course to settle in and get to know the University before diving into your studies.
  • Structured learning pathways: The course is crafted with a clear focus on preparing you for your future career, year on year.
  • Hands-on project experience: Projects and practical activities are designed around real-world property scenarios, not abstract theory.
  • Industry-informed teaching: Content is kept current through our industry links, staff research and active work in the property sector.
  • Placement opportunities: A guaranteed Professional Development Placement for every student, giving you real experience before you graduate.

Graduates from this course go on to a wide range of roles across the property sector, including:

  • Commercial Property Surveyor — managing, valuing and advising on offices, retail and industrial property.
  • Residential Property Manager — overseeing rental properties or housing developments, tenants and compliance.
  • Real Estate Appraiser — providing market valuations for sales, development, mortgages or taxation.
  • Facilities or Asset Manager — managing the operation and long-term planning of physical buildings.
  • Planning and Development Surveyor — assessing land and property for redevelopment and planning permission.
  • Investment Analyst (Real Estate) — analysing trends and managing property investment portfolios.
  • Estate Agent or Lettings Negotiator — selling or letting residential or commercial property.

Graduate Property Management and Real Estate Surveyors are also usually eligible to study property-related qualifications at Master's level, giving you a clear route to further specialise your career.
