Why choose this course?

93% of students were satisfied with the teaching on this course (NSS, 2026).

Few sports coaching courses let you learn where the professionals do.
This course is delivered pitch-side at Molineux Stadium, home of Wolverhampton Wanderers since 1889, in partnership with Wolves Foundation. You'll study coaching theory and practice in a professional sporting environment, then put it into action straight away.

You can expect to:

  • study and train inside Wolves Foundation facilities, including a pitch-side classroom at Molineux and practical sessions at The Dome, Aldersley Leisure Centre
  • complete a micro-placement linked to every module, working alongside experienced coaches and community practitioners from Year One
  • learn from a course aligned with Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) professional standards, so you graduate with the skills employers expect
  • have the option to progress onto our BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (top-up) degree
  • turn strong placement performance into paid casual work with Wolves Foundation, when opportunities arise.

What's unique about this course?

This course couldn't happen anywhere else. You'll learn in a pitch-side classroom at Molineux Stadium, with practical sessions at The Dome, Aldersley Leisure Centre, giving you a professional sporting environment most students only ever visit.

  • Your placements go beyond football. As well as coaching, you'll contribute to Wolves Foundation projects covering health, education and community wellbeing, giving you a broader grounding in sport and community development than a football-only coaching course.
  • Every module includes a micro-placement, not just a single placement year, so you're gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from the moment you start.
  • The course is aligned with Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) professional standards, mapping your learning directly to what employers in the sector expect.
  • Strong placement performance can lead to paid casual work with Wolves Foundation, giving you a genuine route from study into employment.

You'll also be part of a professional sporting institution with a history stretching back to 1889, and a foundation charity trusted across Wolverhampton and the Black Country for its work in health, education and youth engagement.

What happens on the course?

This two-year Foundation Degree is designed to build your confidence step by step. In Year One, you'll get to grips with the essentials of coaching and community sport development, supported by interactive workshops, seminars and guided placements. You'll begin by shadowing experienced coaches before gradually leading sessions of your own.

By Year Two, you'll be taking on real responsibility: planning, delivering and evaluating your own coaching sessions and community projects with growing independence. You'll explore sport psychology, research methods and event management, and apply sports science and coaching technology, including performance analysis, to develop your own coaching identity.

Across the course, you will:

  • explore the theories and pedagogical approaches that underpin effective sports coaching
  • apply sports science and coaching technology to analyse and improve your own coaching practice
  • design and deliver inclusive sessions for a wide range of participants and community settings
  • complete a micro-placement linked to every module, working directly with Wolves Foundation
  • build a professional portfolio of coaching experience, ready for graduate-level employment.

Assessment reflects the real demands of coaching. You'll be assessed through a mix of practical coaching sessions, reflective portfolios, presentations and written reports, rather than exams alone. Early, low-stakes tasks help you build confidence before you move on to more independent, applied assessments, such as planning and delivering a community event or evaluating a coaching intervention. You'll get regular feedback from tutors, peers and mentors throughout.

Academic and digital skills, including the responsible use of AI in sport, are built into your modules rather than taught separately, so you'll graduate confident using the tools and technology the sport industry relies on.

Employability on the course

Employability sits at the heart of this course, not as an add-on. You'll complete a structured micro-placement linked to each module, developing your practice under the guidance of Wolves Foundation coaches and community practitioners.

Your placements are designed to grow with you. Over the two years, you will:

  • start by shadowing and assisting experienced coaches and community practitioners
  • progress to leading your own sessions and small projects with increasing independence
  • work on live briefs and real Wolves Foundation projects, rather than simulated tasks
  • build a professional portfolio of coaching evidence to show future employers
  • receive regular mentoring from your student development officer, who links your studies to your placement experience.

Because you'll be working with children and community groups, you'll need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and an Occupational Health check, in line with professional safeguarding standards for the sector.

The course is aligned with CIMSPA professional standards, and employability workshops delivered with Wolves Foundation help you identify your strengths, explore career pathways and prepare for graduate-level roles in coaching, community sport or sport development. Strong placement performance can also lead to paid casual work with Wolves Foundation, subject to availability, and you can progress onto our BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (top-up) if you want to continue your studies.
