Entry requirements at the University of Wolverhampton vary by course and are designed to reflect the academic knowledge, skills and experience needed to succeed on your chosen programme. Full details are available on individual course pages.

For UK applicants, requirements may include one or more of the following:

  • Level 2 qualifications, such as GCSEs or recognised equivalents
  • Level 3 qualifications, including A levels, BTECs, T Levels or similar awards
  • An interview, portfolio review or assessment day may be required for your course.
  • Additional checks, such as Occupational Health screening or a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

The University of Wolverhampton has a long-standing commitment to widening participation and creating opportunities for students from all backgrounds. We aim to support you to achieve your potential and progress towards your career goals as part of a welcoming and inclusive academic community.

Contextual Admissions

We recognise that academic performance can be influenced by a wide range of personal and educational circumstances. To ensure a fair admissions process, we use contextual admissions. This allows us to consider additional information from your application and any barriers you may have experienced. Applicants who meet our contextual eligibility criteria may receive an offer that is lower than the standard published entry requirements. GCSE Requirements

Most undergraduate courses require a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics. For some courses, GCSE Science is also required.
A small number of courses do not require GCSE Mathematics. Where this applies, it will be clearly stated in the entry requirements for the course.

GCSE English and Maths Equivalents

We accept Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications in English and Mathematics. If you hold an alternative Level 2 qualification, please contact us for confirmation of its suitability for your chosen course.

The UCAS Tariff

Many undergraduate courses, particularly those applied for through UCAS, specify entry requirements using UCAS Tariff points.
The UCAS Tariff provides a common framework for comparing a wide range of Level 3 qualifications, including A levels, AS levels and BTECs, with new qualifications added regularly. If your qualification is not listed on our website, the UCAS Tariff Calculator can help you understand how it compares. (Calculate your UCAS Tariff points | UCAS).

For many non-professional courses (those not accredited by an external professional body), we may still be able to consider your application if your qualifications are not listed or if your grades are slightly below the standard requirement. Each application is reviewed individually, and where appropriate we may offer guidance or suggest an alternative course that better suits your profile.

Accepted Level 3 Qualifications

Offers are based on UCAS Tariff points as detailed on the relevant course page, normally from three A level subjects. AS levels may be considered alongside A levels; however, two AS levels cannot replace one full A level. Some courses require specific subjects.

We accept BTEC Level 3 qualifications with UCAS Tariff points as specified in course details. The following combinations are recognised:

Extended Diploma

  • Diploma plus one A level (or equivalent)
  • Subsidiary Diploma plus two A levels (or equivalent)

Some courses may specify subjects, units or minimum grades at module level.

We accept OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications using UCAS Tariff points as outlined on course pages. Accepted combinations include:

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma
  • Level 3 Diploma plus one A level (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 Introductory Diploma plus two A levels (or equivalent)

Certain courses may require specific subjects or units.

An overall pass is required, with grades aligned to course entry criteria. Some courses may require specific subjects to be studied at Higher Level.

An overall grade of Merit or Distinction is normally required, depending on the course. Some programmes require specific pathways or specialisms.

Offers are based on UCAS Tariff points, normally from three Advanced Highers, or two Advanced Highers plus two Highers. Where a specific subject is required, it must be achieved at Advanced Higher level.

Applicants should achieve a pass including at least four subjects at Higher Level.

We accept QAA-recognised Access to HE Diplomas, normally requiring 45 Level 3 credits and 15 Level 2 credits. Where a course specifies a subject requirement, a set number of Level 3 credits or minimum grades in the relevant subject will apply.

For some courses, an interview, audition or portfolio presentation forms a compulsory part of the selection process. If shortlisted following an initial assessment, you will be invited to attend.

Applicants applying for courses that lead to professional qualification, statutory registration, or eligibility to practice, and which are regulated by a Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Body (PSRB), must complete additional checks.

These include:

  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • A satisfactory Occupational Health assessment, including evidence of required immunisations and vaccination status

If you have applied to study a degree course with a foundation year at the University of Wolverhampton then in many cases you will be invited to attend a Prepare for Foundation (PFF) Assessment Day.
