What happens on the course?

Areas of study on this course have been carefully selected by the University of Wolverhampton and partnered organisations, ensuring the validity and vocational value of your curriculum. You will study foundational areas of business and law, including financial management, moral responsibility, professional conduct and worldwide, digital-oriented operations, from the outset of degree-level study. Subsequent years will see you progress to a more detailed understanding of legal minutia and business practice, branching out your knowledge under the constructive supervision of Wolverhampton Law School experts. The research-led teaching of our staff focuses your outlook on the latest policy and practical debates, while utilising the cutting-edge equipment and stimulating environment of our dedicated campus facilities.

The sandwich placement adds a year to your curriculum, allowing you to engage in supervised work experience before progressing to final year studies. Following studies will elaborate on advanced and diverse facets of business and law, assessing your knowledge with a final independent project: 8000 words of original research on an area of your choosing. Whether you produce a traditional dissertation, consultancy type project or work in another relevant form, the University remains open-minded and flexible on your interests and manner of content. You may also, as many students choose to do, continue with career work while completing this project.

Students will acquire knowledge in the area of Contract Law and develop practical and employability skills through face-to-face teaching, online activities and collaboration with peers. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: • To consolidate information taught and test immediate knowledge retention. • To gain a deeper understanding of legal issues through critical analysis and application of content. • To develop and reflect on the acquisition of legal and employability skills The module may provide students with the opportunity to be awarded digital badges for different skills and employability activities. Badges may be awarded for the completion of tasks and/or for completion of a self-directed series of activities. Once the tasks have been competed students will be awarded a digital badge that can be shared on portfolio websites such as LinkedIn. The module satisfies the requirement of the Bar Standards Board that a qualifying law degree covers the seven foundations of legal knowledge. Students will acquire knowledge and develop key skills in legal research, writing, analysis, and digital literacy (to include GDPR and secure storage of digital documents as appropriate). This module explores the customer journey from prospect or enquiry to loyal customer or advocate. In this module, students will learn about the marketing strategies and tactics involved in attracting new customers and keeping them. Research suggests it can cost between 5 and 10 times as much to acquire a new customer as it does to retain an existing customer, with the commonly quoted average being 7 times more expensive to acquire a new customer. So why do so many companies spend more time chasing new customers than keeping existing ones? This is the paradox of customer retention and acquisition. This module will enable students to understand the role of customer acquisition and retention in designing contemporary marketing strategies for organisations. Students will gain practical experience of planning marketing campaigns designed to attract, win and retain customers.

It will explore current issues from time to time for example dealing with underperformance, absenteeism and related contractual matters within the legal framework. Major topics for example dismissal and discrimination and rights within the workplace will also be covered.

This module is designed to maximise student engagement, enhance legal research skills, and promote employability. Students can choose to complete a written research project or a practical law volunteering project providing legal advice, or any other approved placement involving legal practice. The supervised law research project and the volunteering project will both foster digital literacy and academic writing skills. The volunteering project will require a minimum period of engagement, interviewing clients, researching client issues and producing written advice to the client. Both the research project and the volunteering project will include a reflection. The module will provide students with a structured framework for developing research methodologies necessary to advise a client on practical legal issues and carry out academic legal research, develop the ability to critical analyse, and enhance professional writing techniques. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: To learn advanced research methodologies and techniques, to understand digital literacy skills for academic and professional contexts, consolidate knowledge of academic writing and critical analysis, develop project management and independent study skills. Students may be awarded digital badges for completing research tasks, which can be showcased on professional platforms like LinkedIn to enhance career prospects.

The Professional Project capstone module is an independent study unit. Students will be able to draw together learning form their previous subjects, focusing on their key strengths, in the production of a business artefact. Alongside the artefact students will develop a written critical reflection, which is designed elucidate their rational for choice of artefact and reflect on the process of its production and dissemination.

The BA (Hons) Business and Law is a popular course within the School of Law Social Sciences & Communications and is based on the study of what are considered essential modules for this area of specialism. It was first developed as a collaborative programme between the University of Wolverhampton Business School, the School of Law, Social Sciences & Communications and SCOPE City University Hong Kong and is now offered in the UK and also continues to be offered in Hong Kong as a ‘Top-up’ degree for the City University programme of study.
 
In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the School’s average ranking was the joint highest ranking of all new universities within the Region with 65% of law staff ranked at an international level or above. It was also rated as Excellent for business and management studies in The Sunday Times University Guide in 2007.
 
Mooting and other legal skills competitions provide the UK students the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a lawyer.  Also, a purpose built courtroom gives you a taste of life in a real court, with purpose-built legal equipment and state-of-the-art acoustics.
There are also regular visits to The Inns of Court, Houses of Parliament as well as career talks from local firms, police, and other relevant organisations.
 
The BA(Hons) Business and Law programme can be studied full time (UK), or by intensive block delivery (Hong Kong). 

Skills formed and honed throughout this course will prove especially applicable to Business and Law careers, while filling a broader, transferrable role in the wider world of work. You will comprehensively understand issues of business policy, organisation management and legal fundamentals, underpinning your work in these areas with vital knowledge. To prepare you for this work, a number of fundamental abilities will be trained – innovative problem-solving, communication, research, collaboration and independence, among others – sufficiently equipping you for careers of choice and singling you out to employers across various industries.
