A full academic year in industry, not a summer placement — Your Industrial Placement sits in the course structure as its own dedicated year (Year 3), carrying the same 40 credits as any other year-long module — a level of depth most "placement year" claims elsewhere don't structurally back up.

The same degree, extended rather than replaced — Years 1, 2 and 4 are the same core Mechanical Engineering content as the standard route — solid mechanics, thermodynamics, CAD, CFD, FEA, additive manufacturing and your individual innovation project — so you're not trading academic depth for workplace time, you're getting both.

A natural bridge into UWM and Innovations Unleashed — Coming back from a year in industry, you re-join a course built around real design-and-manufacture practice groups and an annual showcase event — meaning your placement experience feeds directly back into live projects and a platform to present them on, rather than sitting separately from your academic work.

What happens on the course?

  • Year 1 — Foundations and Fundamentals. Build your grounding in solid mechanics and thermodynamics, get hands-on with CAD, and take your first steps into CFD and FEA, while working on industry-informed projects tackling real challenges like sustainable manufacturing.
  • Year 2 — Specialisation and Depth. Go deeper into advanced computational analysis, and start designing and manufacturing components using Additive Layer Manufacturing and high-speed machining, alongside an enterprise project exploring specialisms like structural integrity or thermal management with other engineers.
  • Year 3 — Industrial Placement. Step out of the classroom and into a real engineering workplace for a full academic year — applying what you've learned so far, and building the kind of practical, professional experience that's difficult to replicate in any lab or lecture theatre.
  • Year 4 — Application and Innovation. Return to campus and put your placement experience straight to work: apply CAM and Industry 4.0 principles, work on new models and functional parts using metal 3D-printing — including titanium and copper components — and complete an individual innovation project presented at our annual Innovations Unleashed showcase.

Placements on the course

This is the course built entirely around an extended placement year — it's not an add-on, it's the defining feature of this route.

  • A dedicated, credit-bearing placement year. Your Industrial Placement carries 40 credits and occupies a full academic year (Year 3) in its own right — structurally equivalent to any other year of the degree, not a shorter add-on module.
  • Positioned for maximum value. Sitting after your first two years of technical grounding and before your final year, the placement lands at the point where you can genuinely contribute in the workplace and bring that experience back to shape your strongest academic work.
  • Support finding and succeeding in your placement.

Employability on the course

  • A full year of workplace experience before you graduate. This is the headline employability advantage of this route — a substantial, credit-bearing placement year gives you a depth of practical experience that's hard to match through shorter placements alone.
  • The same professional recognition as every other graduate here. IMechE accreditation and the route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status apply equally, regardless of which Mechanical Engineering route you took to get there.
