If you want a career in software, cloud, cybersecurity or data, but you're not ready to commit to one narrow specialism at 18, this degree is built for you. You'll spend your first two years building a genuinely broad, practical foundation across modern computing — programming, databases, networks, web and server technologies — before choosing options that shape a final year, and a career, that's entirely yours.

You'll be taught by academics who are active researchers in the University's  Digital Innovations and Solution Centre (DISC), so the curriculum is shaped by current industry and research developments, not a fixed syllabus that dates quickly in a fast-moving field.

Every student also has access to placement opportunities designed to build real workplace experience alongside academic study, with the option to extend this into a full sandwich placement year between Year 2 and Year 3 — giving you the choice of how much industry experience you build in before you graduate.

  • A distinctive first-year module: alongside the core programming and computing modules, Year 1 includes Interactive 3D Applications — building interactive 3D environments using the same technology that underpins games, simulation and visualisation tools, while developing the academic skills you need for the rest of your degree.
  • Research-informed teaching: delivered within the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, with academic input from the Digital Innovations and Solution Centre (DISC), keeping content connected to current research and industry practice.
  • A professionally grounded final project: your 40-credit final-year project is paired with a Professionalism module covering the social, legal and ethical responsibilities of working in computing, mapped to BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, guidelines.

What happens on the course?

The course is structured to take you from computing fundamentals to specialist, industry-ready skills over three years — with a genuine choice of direction built in from Year 2 onwards. A full module-by-module breakdown is available below; here's how the three years fit together.

Year 1: Building your foundation

Your first year gives you a working grasp of the whole of computing, so that when you specialise later, you're choosing from real understanding rather than guesswork. You'll:

  • Learn the logic, problem-solving and programming fundamentals that sit behind every computing discipline
  • Design and build an interactive 3D application, while developing the academic skills — research, writing, referencing — you'll rely on for the rest of your degree
  • Deploy, configure and secure servers in virtual environments, and get hands-on with cloud computing
  • Build a database-backed website and get your first grounding in information systems management for business and IT contexts

Year 2: Broadening out — and starting to specialise

Year 2 extends your web and database skills and introduces networking, while giving you your first real choice of direction. You'll:

  • Configure real network equipment — switches and routers — as used in production networks
  • Build a full stack web application from front end to back end, and work in a team to develop a software product from scratch
  • Choose between Data Mining and Cybersecurity Architecture and Operations, then between Network Security and Cloud Systems — your first steps toward a specialism
  • Finish the year with a solid, employable working knowledge of core computing principles, ready for an optional placement year

Between Years 2 and 3, you can take a sandwich placement year and spend a full year working in industry before returning to complete your degree. See the Placements section below for details.

Year 3: Specialist skills, real-world application

Your final year sharpens your expertise and culminates in a substantial individual project. You'll:

  • Study advanced database and knowledge systems, including data warehousing and semantic knowledge structures
  • Choose two specialist option modules from areas including Intelligent Systems (AI), Advanced Full Stack Development, Emerging Interactive Technologies, Big Data, Advanced Networks and Risk and Cybersecurity Management
  • Complete a 40-credit individual project, supported by a dedicated supervisor, where you apply everything you've learned to a practical problem of your choosing — alongside a Professionalism module covering the ethical, legal and professional standards expected in the computing industry
