Forensic science applies scientific method to criminal and civil investigation — from recovering evidence at a scene, through laboratory analysis, to explaining what that evidence means in a court of law. This course takes you through that entire pathway. You'll build the scientific grounding in biology, chemistry, statistics and Bayesian reasoning that underpins forensic casework, then apply it through recovering, analysing and interpreting evidence, and finally learn to communicate your findings clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences alike, including inside a mock courtroom.

In addition, if you choose to undertake a sandwich degree, the course will allow you to acquire technical skills in the workplace and enable you to integrate knowledge gained in the theoretical aspects of the course into the professional environment.

What's unique about this course?

Most forensic science degrees teach the science and the crime scene skills. Wolverhampton goes further in three specific ways:

  • You learn to think like a working forensic expert, not just a lab technician. From your first year, teaching is built around the Case Assessment and Interpretation (CAI) framework used across the profession, with a deliberate emphasis on Bayesian reasoning — the statistical logic forensic scientists use to weigh the strength of evidence and express it as a likelihood, not a certainty.
  • You cross-examine your own evidence — literally. In your final year, Advanced Topics and the Expert Witness culminates in a mock court exercise: you present and defend an evidential statement as an expert witness, in front of peers and staff. Few undergraduate forensic courses put students in the witness box before graduation.
  • Specialisms that go beyond the standard curriculum. Alongside core DNA, drugs, toxicology and crime scene modules, you'll study Forensic Anthropology — identifying and analysing skeletal remains for medico-legal and humanitarian casework — a specialism not every UK forensic science degree offers at undergraduate level.
  • Quality assurance is taught as a career skill, not an afterthought. You'll study the Forensic Science Regulator's statutory Code of Practice, ISO accreditation standards, and international guidance from bodies like ENFSI and OSAC — the exact frameworks employers expect you to already understand on day one of the job.
  • A direct line into a live regional police force. The West Midlands Police partnership isn't a guest-lecture add-on — it shapes case studies, offers research-project routes, and gives you employability access most competitor courses in the region can't match.

What happens on the course?

Across three years (or six part-time), you move from the fundamentals of forensic science through to designing and defending your own piece of original research — building technical, analytical and courtroom-ready communication skills at every stage.

Year 1 — Building your scientific foundation
You start with the biology, chemistry and legal grounding every forensic scientist needs, taught from day one in a forensic context rather than as abstract science.

  • Learn core biological and chemical principles — cell biology, genetics, atomic structure and chemical reactions — alongside the analytical and laboratory skills that turn theory into usable evidence.
  • Get introduced to the legal and regulatory framework forensic scientists work within, including the role of the Forensic Science Regulator and ISO laboratory accreditation.
  • Build your academic and digital skills, including scientific literature searching, data handling and the responsible use of AI in academic work, through a dedicated induction module.

Year 2 — Specialising in major evidence types
This is where the course opens out into the core disciplines of forensic casework.

  • Work with DNA profiling, fingerprint and biometric evidence, and forensic odontology to understand how human identification actually happens in practice.
  • Study drugs, toxicology and noxious substances, including how poisoning, overdose and postmortem cases are investigated using chromatographic analysis (GC-FID/MS and LC/MS).
  • Manage complex and major crime scenes, learning scene preservation, forensic strategy and evidence recovery to the standards of ISO 17020.
  • Reflect on your own professional development and start applying quality assurance principles to your own practice.

Year 3 — Becoming the expert in the room
Your final year sharpens the skills that separate a graduate from a working professional.

  • Examine physical evidence types — toolmarks, footwear impressions, ballistics, glass, fibres and soils — and learn to evaluate how reliable each type of evidence really is.
  • Study forensic anthropology, learning to identify and analyse skeletal remains for medico-legal and humanitarian investigations.
  • Prepare and defend an evidential statement as an expert witness in a mock court exercise.
  • Complete your Honours Project: an independent, in-depth investigation into a forensic topic of your choice — from DNA analysis to decomposition — supervised one-to-one by a specialist academic.

Throughout all three years, teaching blends lectures, demonstrations and guided labs early on with case-study analysis, simulated crime scenes and group project work as you progress — supported by Canvas for on-demand access to recordings, discussion boards and interactive resources.

This degree prepares you for direct entry into forensic and scientific careers, including trainee forensic scientist, crime scene investigator, and laboratory-based scientific roles, as well as quality assurance and quality control positions. The analytical, evidence-evaluation and reporting skills you build also transfer well beyond forensics — graduates have gone on to further study (including forensic anthropology postgraduate research), science education, and analytical roles such as criminal intelligence analysis with the police.

Potential Career Paths

Forensic Science graduates have excellent job prospects. According to unistats.com, 85% of our graduates are in employment within 6 months of leaving, placing us in the top 10 universities for employability.

Employment opportunities exist for you with the Forensic Science Sector both with independent providers of forensic analysis and police scientific work, insurance companies, legal firms and independent forensic laboratories.

Examples of possible future careers include scene of crime work, quality assurance in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, trading standards, public and industrial health and safety, and accident investigation.

You could also train to become a science teacher or continue your studies as a postgraduate either on a Masters course or PhD.

Some of our graduates are working for LGC Forensics and Key Forensics as forensic scientists.

Others are working for the West Midlands Police, West Mercia Police, Staffordshire Police and the Leicestershire Constabulary as crime scene investigators, fingerprint and footwear analysts, criminal intelligence analysts and police officers.

The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences provides an accreditation system for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in forensic science and related topics. Accreditation is given provided the course content meets with the Society's component standards which provide a quality endorsement of the course.
