Why choose this course?

93% of students were satisfied with the teaching on this course (NSS, 2026).

Not everyone arrives at university with three science A-levels, and you shouldn't need them to build a career in sport and exercise science. BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year is a four-year route onto our CASES- and CIMSPA-accredited degree, designed for students who need extra academic preparation, hold relevant experience, or are returning to study after a break. Your Foundation Year builds the scientific knowledge, academic skills and confidence you need, before you join the full Sport and Exercise Science degree alongside your peers.

From Year 2 onwards, you'll study the same biomechanical, physiological and psychological influences on human performance as our direct-entry students, and graduate with the same dual professional recognition: endorsement through the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme (CUES), and by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

  • You don't need traditional Level 3 qualifications to apply — relevant interest or experience, backed by a Prepare for Foundation assessment day, can be enough.
  • You will build academic confidence gradually, with a Foundation Year designed specifically to bridge the gap between prior learning and degree-level study.
  • You will graduate with the same dual CASES and CIMSPA accreditation as our three-year course.
  • You will have a professional placement guaranteed as part of your course, from your very first year.

What's unique about this course?

  • A genuine bridge into science. Your Foundation Year is designed specifically to build subject knowledge, academic skills and confidence, not simply to repeat sixth-form content.
  • Flexible entry. The Prepare for Foundation assessment day route means relevant interest or experience can support your application, even without standard Level 3 qualifications.
  • Dual professional accreditation. You graduate with the same CASES (CUES) and CIMSPA endorsement as our three-year course.
  • State-of-the-art technology. Access to our environmental chamber, zero-gravity treadmill, 3D motion capture system and isoinertial flywheel gym as your studies progress.
  • Real professional partnerships. Opportunities to work alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Walsall FC, West Bromwich Albion and GB Judo.
  • A guaranteed professional placement.

What happens on the course?

Your first year, the Foundation Year, is studied at Level 3 and is designed to be student-centred: you'll be encouraged to participate actively, reflect on your progress and take ownership of your learning. Teaching blends theoretical study, practical experience and independent learning, with group sessions, interactive workshops and one-to-one support giving you tailored guidance at every step.

From Year 2, your course follows the same structure as our direct-entry Sport and Exercise Science students: building core scientific and practical skills, then applying them to real industry problems, before tackling complex, real-world challenges in your final year.

Throughout the course, you can expect to:

  • take part in practical sport activities, coaching sessions, fitness testing and warm-up leading during your Foundation Year
  • move into laboratory, workshop and practical teaching environments as you progress
  • be taught by research-active staff who bring real-world applied experience into the classroom
  • be supported by a personal tutor, a peer mentor and, in your Foundation Year, a dedicated peer mentoring scheme
  • show your learning in different formats, from lab reports and presentations to podcasts, video “fireside chats” and digital reflective diaries
  • earn digital badges as you complete additional competencies to evidence your skills to employers.

You'll have the opportunity to work with a range of professional sport organisations, clubs and university sports teams, including partners such as Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Walsall FC and GB Judo, and you'll have the option of transferring onto a full sandwich placement year later in your studies, including opportunities abroad. The University's School of Sport has also been awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Department Award for its work supporting gender equality.

Placements on the course

We've built professional placements into every degree — every student on BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year is guaranteed a professional placement, starting with practical, sport-based experience in your Foundation Year. Placements give you the real-world exposure and proven experience your CV needs, while building the industry networks essential for your career.

These short-term, structured experiences include:

  • short duration: condensed, work-like experience in professional sport and exercise environments
  • academic integration: always linked to your coursework, assessments or professional development modules
  • project-based learning: you'll work on specific tasks or research with an organisation
  • flexible format: placements can be in-person, remote, hybrid or virtual
  • skill development: placements enhance workplace skills like communication, teamwork and problem-solving
  • experiential learning: helping to close the gap between the knowledge you gain and the skills you need to succeed.

As you progress into Year 2 and beyond, you can also apply to transfer onto an optional sandwich placement year, taking a full year of work experience that can be undertaken abroad.

Employability on the course

Our courses are designed from day one to prepare you for your future career, and on the Foundation Year route that preparation starts even earlier. You will benefit from:

  • an extended, supportive induction: settling into university life while gradually building academic confidence and subject knowledge
  • essential skills development from Year 1: communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving and academic writing, built through practical sport activities
  • structured learning pathways: courses crafted to prepare you for future careers, year by year
  • embedded professional development: workplace skills development and a guaranteed professional placement built into every year of your course
  • industry-informed modules: content kept current through our staff's research and their links with partners including Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Walsall FC and GB Judo
  • digital badges: evidenced competencies you can showcase directly to employers.
