Chaplaincy reopens with a bright new look
The University Chaplaincy has recently had a refresh, and the transformation makes a big difference. The space now features a brand‑new kitchen, new flooring, a fresh coat of paint to brighten things up, and comfortable new seating - making it an even more welcoming place for students and staff to come together.
The layout has also been opened up, with a new counter creating more room to work alongside one another and cater for larger numbers more efficiently. This update was driven by the huge success of the weekly Global Lunches, which serve up delicious world cuisine prepared by student volunteers. As popularity grew, so did the need for a space that could better support the activity.
Colleagues from Estates & Facilities were quick to rise to the challenge. Samantha Bevington, Head of Asset Management and Delivery, alongside Sandra Sharma, Space Planner, got the ball rolling by developing an initial design, working closely with the Chaplaincy team and students to shape the plans. Martin Harris then project‑managed the fit‑out, supported by his skilled team of carpenters, helping to bring the vision to life.
We’re also incredibly grateful to our local construction contractor Novus, who generously donated the décor and a new kitchen door free of charge through their Social Value Scheme. Novus are currently working with the University on student accommodation refurbishments and fire door replacements, and their contribution made a real difference to the project.
To see the transformation for yourself, watch the video above, featuring Sandra from Estates, Head of the Chaplaincy, Sarah, and student volunteers as they share their reactions to the newly refurbished space.

The Chaplaincy is now officially reopened, so do pop in to see the changes and stay for a cuppa and a chat.
Global Lunches will be returning to Wednesdays, starting off on an occasional basis and building back up to weekly sessions.
Student volunteers are always welcome to support the lunches and other Chaplaincy activities. It’s a great way to gain experience, build confidence and meet new people.
