Wolverhampton Literature Festival: Memories of the Beatles

As part of Wolverhampton Literature Festival, our School of English Literature and Psychology will lead interactive experiments exploring how sound, sight, touch, and even smell can trigger memories of the world’s most famous band.
The team is particularly keen to hear from local residents who attended Beatles concerts in the West Midlands.

 About the event

"There are places I remember / All my life, though some have changed", sang John Lennon on In My Life (1965). Although we know memory is fallible and elusive, it is also, as Lennon suggests, an extremely powerful and enduring force shaping our lives. Our sense of self is anchored in our formative childhood experiences. We make everyday as well as life-changing decisions using our personal understanding of our past. We find comfort in our most cherished remembered experiences, even though we know that these are often rose-tinted.

At this event, we invite the public to share and explore their memories of the Beatles in a series of interactive multi-sensory experiments. You will be invited to engage in a psychological test that will involve auditory, visual and olfactory stimuli aimed at retrieving memories and testing recall. You also have the chance to bring, and talk about, your Beatles memorabilia, bringing back to your special Beatles moments. Our team is particularly interested in members of the public who went to a live concert by the Beatles in the West Midlands, though the event is open to adults of all ages.
