RAF inspired performance takes to the stage at the Arena Theatre
The University's Arena Theatre was delighted to host RISE - a performance inspired by the stories and heritage of the Royal Air Force (RAF) on Saturday 30 May.
RISE was the culmination of Project Xpedition 2026, and was created by young people aged 11-16 years old in just four days under the direction of Artistic Director of Flexus Dance Collective (FDC) and Associate Artist of the Arena Theatre, Katy Sterran. FDC is a long-term partner of the Arena Theatre and has delivered this programme across Wolverhampton, the Black Country, and Shropshire with the venue throughout the past five years.
Project Xpedition aims to empower young people with invaluable skills and insight into the Creative Industries, providing an inspiring creative and performance opportunity with an experienced team of industry professionals.
Throughout the project, young people attend workshops by creative professionals on career pathways such as photography, marketing and promotion, social media and technical theatre. These workshops all contribute to a Level 1 Bronze Arts Award or Young Leadership Award that project participants receive upon finishing Project Xpedition.
For 2026, Project Xpedition received funding and support from Access and Widening Participation at the University of Wolverhampton, The Sir Barry Jackson Trust, and the RAF Museum Midlands Community Grants Programme (made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund)
Councillor Paul Singh, Mayor of Wolverhampton, who attended the performance on Saturday evening, said:
"On Saturday, I was delighted to attend RISE at the Arena Theatre and meet some of the talented young performers involved in this inspiring production.
"Project Xpedition brings together young people from across Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas, providing opportunities to develop confidence, creativity and valuable skills through the performing arts. It was wonderful to see the dedication, enthusiasm and talent on display throughout the evening. Programmes such as this play an important role in nurturing young people, helping them to grow, express themselves and explore future opportunities within the creative industries. My thanks to everyone at Arena Theatre, Flexus Dance Collective, and Project Xpedition for their commitment to supporting and empowering the next generation of creative talent."
Project Xpedition is founded and managed by Flexus Dance Collective, delivered in partnership with Arena Theatre.
