Walsall Campus transformation - site works ongoing
The University is currently undertaking a significant infrastructure upgrade at its Walsall Campus as part of an ambitious £11 million decarbonisation project in partnership with Vital Energi.
The initiative, funded through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, is designed to accelerate the University’s journey to net zero by introducing a suite of low-carbon technologies.
Current disruption and access changes
While the long-term benefits of the project are substantial, the campus is currently experiencing disruption due to construction works. Some areas of the campus may appear temporarily disrupted due to ongoing construction as pipework is laid and rooftop installations are completed.
Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January 2026
- The Library will be closed due to electrical works taking place.
- There will be some disruption to power supplies across the campus for approximately 1 hour on Saturday morning (8am) and on Sunday lunchtime (1pm) to switch power supplies. Please take steps to ensure devices are charged prior to the disruption.
- Teams will be available on site to address any questions or concerns.
Temporary Boiler WA Building
- A temporary boiler has been fitted for the WA Building along the boulevard. Some windows have been shut, and pedestrians are asked to take care when walking around the temporary boiler.
Access route changes - January 2026
- Access to teaching buildings from student accommodation and the Sports Centre will be re-routed via the Jerome K Jerome Building (WA) while new high-voltage (HV) cables are installed.
- The walkway between WA and The Performance Hub (WH) will be closed off to allow Vital Energy to re-route the ducting to the HV.
- The route will be from the side of the Students' Union (WS Building) through the gate into the top end of the maintenance yard and into the Go -Lounge.
Network installation
Excavation of trenches for the installation of pipework across the site is ongoing. Please remain cautious around these areas.
On-site signage will also guide you through the temporary diversions.
How you can help
We appreciate your patience and support as we work to transform the campus for a more sustainable future.
Here’s how you can help:
- Please bear with us and take note of all diversion and safety signage around campus.
- Take care when moving around the site and be considerate of others navigating the changes.
- Be mindful of those with accessibility requirements, especially when parking.
- If you have any accessibility concerns or specific requirements, please contact Campus Security for assistance.
- Give yourself extra time to find your classroom or destination, especially if you're unfamiliar with the new routes.
Looking ahead: The Living Lab
A standout feature of the project is the creation of a Living Lab, which will provide real-world research opportunities for students and academics. The lab will monitor the performance of the new technologies and offer insights into sustainable energy systems, supporting both teaching and operational improvements.
