University academic elected Fellow of Royal Historical Society

Senior Lecturer in History, Dr Adam Burns has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (RHS) in recognition of his contribution to historical scholarship.

Founded in 1868, the RHS is now the leading society for historians in the UK, and is frequently consulted by the government when it comes to matters of history and how the past is understood.

“I was delighted to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society,” said Dr Burns. “It is something I have been working towards for many years.

“I very much look forward to joining some of my role models in promoting and representing history as a discipline in 2021 and beyond.”

Dr Burns is already a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, along with being an inclusivity representative and board member for the British Society of Sports History.

Dr Burns’s most recent books, ‘William Howard Taft and the Philippines: A Blueprint for Empire’ and ‘The United States, 1865–1920: Reuniting a Nation’, were published by the University of Tennessee Press and Routledge, respectively, in 2020.

He has an upcoming article on the origins of American football in the journal ‘Sport History Review’ and is working alongside Dr Rivers Gambrell, University of Oxford, on an edited collection exploring the relationship between US presidents and sports for Edinburgh University Press.
