BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE: Nusrat raises the bar with legal career ambitions

Nusrat Shafiullah, 42, from Walsall, is a first year (LLB) Law degree student, with ambitions to eventually move into a legal career.

As a single parent with a 4-year-old child, Nusrat had studied for an English Literature course in Bangladesh before moving to England but knew it wasn’t right for her, so she looked around for an alternative course, eventually deciding that a career in Law would be ideal for her.

She found a suitable course in the University of Wolverhampton Law School but had missed the January deadline for applications.  At the same time she was looking for a suitable school for her child and knew that the time was right for her to start studying again.

She said: “I had found a school for my baby, but having missed the January deadline for applications, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to apply for the course I wanted.

“With my son settled in school, I now had the time to study. I was still getting emails from the University and one of them was to inform me that Clearing had opened and I realised that this was my opportunity to apply.  With my child in school, it was time for me to go back to learning.

“As a single mother with a very active child who needs a lot of attention, I knew it would be a challenge, but I really appreciate the advice I was given by the people working in the Clearing team.  I came to the Open Day in August and managed to speak to someone who was very helpful.

“I started to study part-time on their advice but now my child is settled into school I’m ready now to start studying full-time from this year.

“Most important for me, because I missed the application day, I thought my opportunity had passed.  But if you miss the deadline, get in touch with the University and talk to someone and they will be able to help you.

“The course is great for me. Getting a degree will really expand my options.  The University is really supportive for me as a single parent and have given me some really good advice. This is going to be an amazing achievement for me.”
