University students gain exclusive insight during West Bromwich Albion Academy visit
Football Coaching students from the University of Wolverhampton have enjoyed a unique behind‑the‑scenes experience at West Bromwich Albion FC, strengthening the growing partnership between the University and the Championship club.
During a visit to the Club’s Academy last week, students were given an insider’s look at day-to-day Academy operations, including practical sessions in the Dome and the Academy building. The experience forms part of the University’s continued commitment to providing real‑world, professional environments that support student development and employability.
Russel Smith, Senior Lecturer in Football Coaching, University of Wolverhampton said: “It’s great to work with Professional Club Academies, especially where we have a track record of student to staff member. Students are inspired to see that from their course that working in professional football is achievable.”
The visit also reunited students with three University of Wolverhampton graduates - Kieran Squire, Geovannie Shaw and Dylan Sommel - who are now working full‑time in football at West Bromwich Albion. The alumni shared insights into their career journeys from Walsall Campus to The Hawthorns, emphasising how the University’s ‘earn and learn’ approach equipped them with the experience and confidence to progress into professional roles.
The University’s partnership with West Bromwich Albion has already created multiple successful placement routes and employment pathways for students, following a series of positive outcomes over recent years, The University’s status as the Club’s preferred higher education partner further cements the relationship between the two institutions.
