Wolverhampton stop for 100-mile charity run in memory of teenager lost to meningitis

Wolverhampton will play host to the opening stage of a powerful five-day, 100-mile charity run in memory of 18-year-old Aaron Mills, who tragically died from meningitis earlier this year.

The challenge, organised by Aaron’s father Anthony Mills and undertaken by family friend Shaun McEntee, will raise awareness of meningitis and support the charity Meningitis Now.

Shaun will arrive at the University of Wolverhampton on Wednesday 16 September, completing the first leg of the journey from Aggborough Stadium in Kidderminster. He will arrive at the University between 3-4pm via Stafford Street and the public, staff and students are encouraged to welcome him to the city.

The run holds deep personal significance for Aaron’s family. Beginning at Aggborough Stadium - home to Kidderminster Harriers, the club Aaron supported - the route reflects the places and passions that shaped his life. After his passing, the club paid tribute with a minute’s applause in the 18th minute of a match and presented a shirt bearing ‘AARON 18’.

The journey will end at Anfield in Liverpool on Sunday 20 September, a fitting destination for a lifelong Liverpool FC supporter who had recently begun studying Football Science at Liverpool John Moores University, with dreams of one day working in the sport.

Along the route, the challenge will pass through a number of university communities, with friends and family joining Shaun for different stages - running, cycling and showing their support.

Speaking about the challenge, Shaun McEntee said:
“I want my kids to grow up just like Aaron. Taking on this challenge is my way of honouring him and helping raise awareness so that other families don’t have to go through the same loss.”

Aaron’s father, Anthony Mills, added:
“This run is about keeping Aaron’s memory alive and raising awareness of meningitis, particularly among young people starting university. The support we’ve received has been incredible, and we hope people will come out to show their encouragement and help us make a difference.”

Raising awareness of meningitis and the importance of vaccination is a central aim of the event. Representatives from Meningitis Now are expected to attend the Wolverhampton stop to provide information and support.
