University signs up to global Technician Commitment
The University has signed the internationally recognised Technician Commitment, reinforcing its dedication to supporting and developing its technical workforce.
By becoming a signatory, the University joins a growing global community of universities and research organisations working to improve the visibility, recognition, career development and long-term sustainability of technical professionals.
Technical staff play a critical role in delivering high-quality teaching, research and innovation across the University. Working across disciplines including science, engineering, health, creative industries and digital technologies, technicians underpin specialist facilities, support student learning and contribute directly to research and industry collaboration.
The Technician Commitment is a sector-wide initiative that challenges institutions to take action in four key areas: visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability.
Aman Gill-Knobbs, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, University of Wolverhampton, said:
“Signing the Technician Commitment is an important step in recognising the vital contribution our technical staff make to the success of our University. Our technicians are integral to delivering outstanding teaching, enabling high-quality research and supporting innovation across our campuses.
“This commitment reinforces our ambition to ensure our technical community is fully visible, valued and supported, with clear opportunities for professional development and progression. We are proud to join a global movement that is championing technical talent and strengthening the future of skills in higher education.”
Technician Commitment Associate Lead Simon Breeden added: “We warmly welcome University of Wolverhampton to the Technician Commitment community.
“It is particularly fantastic that the University of Wolverhampton has embedded working with the Technician Commitment as part of its People and Culture Strategy and as part of that partnership technical colleagues at the University of Wolverhampton will be able to access a plethora of development opportunities.
“We look forward to supporting Wolverhampton’s journey in enhancing the visibility and career development of their technical workforce and sharing valuable insights across our growing community.”
As part of the commitment, the University will develop and implement a structured action plan to further enhance support for technicians, ensuring they are recognised for their expertise and equipped with opportunities to progress and thrive within their careers.
The move builds on the University’s wider commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive and high-performing environment for all staff, where every role is valued and contributes to student success and regional impact.
