Combining creative storytelling with technical production skills, the course introduces you to traditional and digital animation while giving you access to professional-grade facilities including 3D motion capture and virtual production, dedicated stop-motion studios and high-spec computer labs. From the start, modules such as Animation Fundamentals, Animation Filmmaking 101, Characters and Environments for Animation and Ways of Seeing help you master the principles of movement, visual storytelling, character development and animated filmmaking.
As you progress, you’ll experiment with a wider range of techniques, software and commercial approaches through modules including Animation Production and Development, Process and Innovation in Animation, Visual Communications and Ways of Being. You can work with tools including Maya, Toon Boom, ZBrush, Unreal Engine 5 and TVPaint, while collaborative projects help recreate the experience of working as part of a professional studio team. Crucially, the course also brings industry into your studies through live client briefs, externally facing projects, workshops, live projects and micro-placement opportunities, giving you experience of responding to real organisations and professional expectations before you graduate.
Your final year is designed to turn everything you have learned into career-ready work. Through Animation Proposal and Planning, Animation Production, Professional Practice in the Animation Industry and Ways of Working, you’ll develop and realise a major animation project, respond to a professional client brief and create a personal strategy for your next steps.
