Russell Prior (Senior Lecturer and Course Leader, Film Production) has 20 years of industry experience with BBC World Service, BBC World News and BBC Sport. He has worked on a variety of factual programming as well as studio-based TV shows. He is passionate about the film and television industry and has a track record of opening pathways for the next generation of film and TV makers. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is studying for a PhD which looks at how media and creative arts subjects can work more closely with industry.

Throughout your studies, you’ll build a robust skill set tailored to both creative expression and professional expectations, including: 

• Camera operation and cinematography, using DSLR, cinema cameras and professional rigs 
• Lighting design for screen, including studio and location setups 
• Scriptwriting and storytelling, across genres, formats and platforms 
• Sound design and audio production, using professional recording and mixing tools 
• Post-production techniques, including editing, colour grading and motion graphics 
• Virtual and green screen production workflows 
• Production planning and team collaboration, developing leadership and project management skills 
• Inclusive and sustainable filmmaking practices, preparing you to shape the future of the industry 

By the time you graduate, you’ll have a versatile portfolio, a wide-ranging technical toolkit, and the creative confidence to thrive across the film and screen sectors.

• BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM

• Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)
• T Levels with an overall grade of Pass and a minimum grade of C in Core.
• UAL L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design or Creative Media Production & Technology - grade M
• QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) Level 5 and Level 6

Other Requirements

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. • Filmmaker Andrew Webber, one of our graduates, has had his films screened at international festivals in the UK, Jamaica, and West Africa. He says, “The University has been extremely supportive, through my studies and after graduation.”

 

• Niki Gandy has pursued a teaching career, and now teaches photography and art in a high school. She says, “I'm a proud graduate of Video and Film Production, a course I chose for its practical content and which helped furnish me with numerous transferable skills necessary to forge my career in teaching. Almost a decade on, my lecturers continue to provide me with support and guidance. I feel certain that my relationship with the University will continue for many years to come.”

 

• Actor and director Brian Duffy, another graduate, came up with the idea for Small World, a comedy series about a group of deaf flatmates which has been shown on TV and online, with a friend. Brian says, “Studying at the University of Wolverhampton helped me with networking and organisation – especially as filmmakers came to Wolverhampton for Deaffest, the UK’s leading deaf film and arts festival. My lecturer could also sign which was a great help and a huge weight off my shoulders – I could talk to her one-to-one. That’s something I never had the pleasure of, pre-university.”

 

• Lauren Shinner has been working in media production ever since graduating. She says, “My time at the University was invaluable, I wouldn't be where I am today without it. The tutors were always helpful and push students to do their best with plenty of support and understanding, and the course prepares you well for your prospective career. I've gone on to work as a video editor in education, ran my own media business, and have done videos for high-end charities and new bands. I am now working in media in another area. Without my degree, none of this would have been possible.”

  Participating in film festivals, including the Birmingham Film Festival, has been an unexpected yet gratifying aspect of this educational expedition. The encouragement and guidance from our course leader have been instrumental in this achievement, reinforcing the practical application of the skills acquired during the course.

  While acknowledging that my journey as a filmmaker is still evolving, the knowledge gained and the ongoing learning process have laid a solid foundation. I am grateful for the immersive experience, the mentorship, and the diverse opportunities that have contributed to my growth as a burgeoning filmmaker.''

Each project becomes a stepping stone, shaping my artistic vision and contributing to my evolving narrative as a filmmaker. One notable instance was when we were tasked with creating a one-page story. I initially struggled to consolidate my ideas, but looking back a few months later, I appreciate the significant progress I've made, thanks to the detailed and step-by-step lessons provided by our tutors. The hands-on nature of the course, involving real filming tasks, significantly boosts my confidence with camera, sound, and lighting equipment. This transformative experience is instrumental in shaping my practical skills and understanding of filmmaking.

Additionally, the multicultural environment at Wolverhampton fosters a sense of belonging, making my international student experience truly enriching. Engaging with diverse perspectives broadens my horizons, not only as a filmmaker but also as an individual navigating a global community.''

The UK government has confirmed that EU students starting courses from 1 August 2021 will normally be classified as having Overseas Fee status. More information about the change is available at UKCISA:

EU citizens living in the UK with 'settled' status, and Irish nationals living in the UK or Ireland, will still be classified as Home students, providing they meet the usual residency requirements, for more information about EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund.

for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
