This module aims to inspire and support you as a trainee teacher and will help you develop knowledge and skills needed to teach English, Mathematics and Science in primary schools and Early Years settings. You will build both your subject knowledge and your understanding of how children learn, so that you can begin to teach these subjects effectively. Throughout the module, you will explore key ideas and theories about teaching and learning. You will consider different perspectives on education and think about how teaching approaches can meet the diverse needs of learners. You will also take part in independent reading and reflection, which will help you evaluate your own developing practice. You will develop a clear understanding of the aims, principles and structure of important curriculum documents such as the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). During the module, you will learn how to plan, teach and evaluate English, Mathematics and Science lessons in primary and Early Years settings. You will also reflect on your own teaching and consider the practice of other educators in order to improve learning outcomes for children. You will also: explore learning theories and how they support effective teaching in core subjects develop your ability to communicate clearly and professionally with children, colleagues, parents and carers through spoken, written and visual methods learn how to organise and use teaching and learning resources effectively in the classroom By the end of the module, you will have developed the foundations needed to teach the core subjects confidently and thoughtfully in primary education.

This module introduces you to the wider (foundation) curriculum in primary education, helping you build the subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding needed to teach a broad and engaging curriculum. You will explore how subjects such as history, geography, art, design and technology, music, computing and physical education contribute to children’s learning and development. Through interactive sessions and practical activities, you will develop strategies to engage and inspire pupils across a range of subjects, while building your own confidence and enthusiasm for teaching them. The module supports you in learning how to plan meaningful learning experiences, select appropriate teaching approaches and design activities that meet the needs of diverse learners. You will be introduced to key educational frameworks and documentation, including the National Curriculum for England and subject guidance from Ofsted, helping you understand how curriculum expectations translate into effective classroom practice. The module also encourages you to explore different perspectives on teaching and learning, including relevant educational theories and approaches to classroom management across different subjects. You will consider how resources, environments and facilities can support effective teaching within the wider curriculum. Alongside taught sessions, guided reading and independent study will help you deepen your subject knowledge. This placement-based module provides you with the opportunity to apply your developing knowledge and skills in a school or Early Years setting. Through a supported teaching placement, you will begin to experience the professional role of a teacher while working with pupils, staff and the wider school community. During the placement, you will observe experienced practitioners, take part in classroom activities and begin to plan and teach lessons under the guidance of your school-based mentor. This structured approach allows you to build confidence in teaching while developing key professional skills such as lesson planning, communication, classroom organisation and reflective practice. You will be supported throughout the placement by both your trained school mentor and a university tutor. They will provide guidance, feedback and professional dialogue to help you reflect on your progress and identify areas for further development. Before the placement begins, you will attend preparatory sessions that outline expectations, professional responsibilities and key teaching practices. Following the placement, you will take part in reflective discussions and tutorials to help you evaluate your experiences and connect them to your academic learning. This module plays an important role in helping you understand the realities of classroom practice while developing the professional behaviours, confidence and reflective skills needed to progress in your teacher training journey.

This extended induction module supports your transition into university life and introduces you to your chosen academic discipline. It helps you build confidence, develop a strong academic identity and understand the expectations of university study. You’ll explore key academic practices including independent learning, digital literacy and ethical academic conduct - such as referencing, plagiarism awareness, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in line with university policy. This module is also designed to support your development as a trainee teacher and education professional. Throughout the module, you will explore examples, case studies and professional expectations that are relevant to teaching and working in education. Your learning will be linked to real classroom practice, helping you understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of teachers. By looking at real examples from schools and early years settings, you will be able to connect what you learn in this module to the day-to-day realities of working in education and to your future career goals. You will begin to learn about how children learn and how you can support teaching and learning in the classroom. The module will also help you begin developing the professional knowledge, attitudes and reflective skills needed as a trainee teacher. This will support you in understanding how your studies relate to professional practice and the expectations of the teaching profession. In addition, the knowledge and skills you gain in this module will help you succeed in other Level 4 modules on your course by giving you a strong foundation for your learning throughout the year. This module lays the foundation for future development, including embedded placement experiences.

This module builds on your Level 4 learning about the core subjects and deepens your knowledge of how to teach English, mathematics and science effectively in primary and early years settings. You will explore the structure and expectations of the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2, alongside relevant areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, including Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics and aspects of Understanding the World. Through engagement with research, policy, and classroom practice, you will develop stronger subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches that support pupils’ learning and progression. In English, you will further develop your understanding of systematic synthetic phonics, reading and writing development, and approaches that promote language, communication and digital literacy. In mathematics, you will explore teaching for mastery, focusing on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. In science, you will deepen your understanding of key scientific concepts and approaches to scientific enquiry that support pupils to think and work scientifically. The module connects theory with classroom practice, helping you plan, teach and assess effectively across the core curriculum. You will also consider how teaching approaches can be adapted to support diverse learners, including pupils with SEND, those learning English as an additional language, and those working at greater depth.

This module builds on your Level 4 learning and further develops your subject and pedagogical knowledge of the wider curriculum as well as developing your understanding of research in primary education. You will deepen your knowledge of the wider curriculum and explore how to plan effective sequences of lessons that help pupils develop subject-specific skills, such as historical enquiry, creative expression, or performance skills in music. The module will also support you in understanding how learning progresses within and across year groups so that teaching builds pupils’ knowledge and skills over time. Alongside this, you will begin to explore the role of research in education. You will begin to explore an area of primary teaching that interests you and review relevant published literature to understand the key ideas and issues in that area. You will also be introduced to different research approaches and consider how educational research is designed, preparing you for the more detailed research investigation you will undertake at Level 6.

This is the second of three assessed school placements which you will undertake during the BA (Hons) in Primary Education course. You will plan, teach and assess, demonstrating that you have built on your first teaching placement and are developing your knowledge, skills and behaviours relating to adaptive teaching and assessment.

This module explores how teachers can adapt their teaching to support all children to succeed, particularly those who experience barriers to learning in primary and early years settings. You will develop your understanding of a wide range of learning needs, including special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and consider how these can affect pupils’ access to learning and participation in the classroom. Through engagement with academic research, guidance such as the SEND Code of Practice, and insights from experienced and expert colleagues, you will examine practical strategies for inclusive and adaptive teaching. The module will support you in identifying and evaluating approaches that help remove barriers to learning while maintaining high expectations, challenge and aspiration for every pupil. Opportunities to engage with partner schools and scenario-based tasks will help you connect theory with practice, allowing you to observe and reflect on adaptive teaching strategies in real educational contexts. You will be able demonstrate, via an understanding of the SEND code of practice, the role of the teacher and wider professionals/parents for adapting teaching which ultimately provides challenge and aspiration for all pupils. By the end of the module, you will be able to apply inclusive principles and adaptive teaching approaches to plan learning that supports the progress and participation of all pupils.

This module supports you in developing secure subject knowledge and effective pedagogical approaches across the core primary subjects: English, mathematics and science. Building on your Level 4 and level 5 modules, you will further explore key concepts from each curriculum area and consider how these can be taught in ways that promote deep understanding for primary learners. Throughout the module, you will examine a range of teaching approaches and consider how subject knowledge and pedagogy work together to support effective learning. The module encourages you to reflect critically on different strategies for teaching English, mathematics and science, drawing on research, curriculum guidance and classroom practice.

This module gives you the opportunity to deepen your subject and pedagogical knowledge in an area of education that interests you, while also developing the professional behaviours needed for a successful start to your teaching career. You will identify and focus on a key area of development that is relevant to contemporary primary education. Through taught sessions, engagement with current research, input from expert colleagues and experiences in schools and visits, you will strengthen your understanding of how to motivate pupils and teach your chosen subject effectively. You will explore practical strategies for modelling learning and making ideas clear and accessible for all learners. As part of the module, you will design and develop your own scaffolded teaching resources to support pupils in understanding complex ideas through concrete and engaging approaches. You will also take part in reflective practice, using feedback and discussion with expert colleagues to support your professional growth. This will help you understand the importance of collaboration and ongoing professional development in building sustainable and effective teaching practices throughout your career.

This module enables you to design, carry out and write a small-scale research project focused on a specialist area of interest within early primary or primary education. Building on the foundational work and tutor feedback from the Level 5 Research module, you will refine and develop a detailed and rigorous research design to guide your investigation. You will critically engage with relevant academic literature to justify your research focus and methodological choices. As part of the research process, you will complete an ethical approval application and ensure that your study adheres to appropriate ethical standards for research involving educational settings and participants. You will plan and carry out data collection within an early primary or primary educational context, using appropriate research methods. The module will support you in systematically analysing and interpreting your data, enabling you to critically evaluate your findings in relation to existing research and theoretical perspectives. The final outcome of the module is a well-structured and academically rigorous written research project that clearly communicates your research process, analysis, and conclusions. Throughout the module you will be expected to work with a high level of independence while making effective use of academic literature, online resources, tutor guidance, and peer discussion to support your research journey.

    Your personal statement is an important part of the application process. We will be reviewing your personal statement to find out more about you and we will also be reviewing your spelling, grammar and punctuation and you have followed the UCAS (for undergraduate applications) or DfE Apply (for post graduate applications) guidance regarding length and what to include. Your application will not be successful if you do not demonstrate the high standards of accuracy the teaching profession demands.

     

    Important Requirements

    As part of the Department for Education (DfE) ITT compliance, if you are successful you will be required to provide your ORIGINAL certificates to the University of Wolverhampton Admissions Unit.

    We will not accept applicants onto our professional courses who have been unsuccessful on professional courses at other institutions of higher education.

    Interview and Selection

    First Stage: All applicants that are successful with their application will be invited to complete a set of short professional scenarios involving reading, writing and numerical tasks. These will provide us with an audit of your existing strengths as well as indicate any areas where you need to develop your knowledge and understanding during your course. If you are offered a place following interview, you will be required to demonstrate your professional readiness through successful completion of all of the tasks as one of your conditions of acceptance before the course starts. This may mean that you are asked to attend support sessions in English and mathematics during your course to enable you to demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency by the completion of your course.

    Any work to address shortfalls in English and Mathematics must be undertaken by the trainee teacher in addition to other aspects of their training. It is the trainee’s responsibility to secure these fundamental skills before being recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.

    Second Stage: You will undertake either an observed group task or a subject-specific activity (if you are applying for secondary teacher training).

    Third Stage: You will engage in individual face to face interview with one of the primary teaching team.

    International Applicants: Due to logistical constraints, an online interview that will also involve a reading task with competence measures to assess your suitability to teach and engage in the course..

    Throughout the application process, we will be assessing your ability to be able to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the completion of your course.

    Those successful in the audits and at interview will be subsequently required to meet enhanced DBS checks, fitness to teach and medical check and prohibition order check requirements. You will be expected to complete these forms once you have been successful and have a Conditional Offer.

    If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This will be free of charge.

    You will also need an Occupational Health Check and a prohibition check prior to starting the course.
